Considering the power of AI, what if some evil genius secretly decided to make something called EvilAI that has the sole purpose of infecting networks and taking over all technology connected to the internet?

How far are we from something usable?

Are we still at the stage of theory or are there already projects that try to implement such artificial intelligence?

And I know that there are several uni that are researching general purpose artificial intelligence, but who is currently leading the field?
