the answer to why gene engineering is bad is incredibly simple: it will either result in tragedy of the commons or the engineering of a slave race of humans by governments. if individuals control evolution it will spiral out of control with sexual selection until humans are as deformed as purebred dogs today, if governments control it they will use it to make humans irrepairably docile and domesticated.
