Has it ever been true that "a single academic" changed the world?
All great scientists of history collaborated with others, even the ancient Greeks. Don't get fooled just because they only threw 1 guy's name on the theorem.
In several cases, the world-changing contribution isn't an answer, but rather, a question. The right question can motivate entire fields of research.

>with so much low hanging fruit gone
What we call "low-hanging" depends on how tall our ladder is.
For example, quantum computing is about to come into its own, so who knows what kind of solutions will become apparent to someone once they understand the technology? (And then 100 years later, their discovery will be called obvious "low hanging fruit" in hindsight by some edgelord online)

Lorentz
>I considered my time transformation only as a heuristic working hypothesis. So the theory of relativity is really solely Einstein's work. And there can be no doubt that he would have conceived it even if the work of all his predecessors in the theory of this field had not been done at all.

Poincare
>Einstein does not remain attached to the classical principles, and when presented with a problem in physics he quickly envisages all of its possibilities. This leads immediately in his mind to the prediction of new phenomena which may one day be verified by experiment.
