Why not defund the maritime, rail, aviation, or automobile industries to "feed the poor"? Because those industries serve an important role in the economy of the country, and their defunding would inflict much more harm than good even if the money from their budgets were used in purely humanitarian ways. So why treat the space industry differently? It too serves critical roles in the economy and security of this nation. Navigation, communication, resource monitoring, material research, and so much more. Even more importantly, it is a budding industry with untapped potential, and whoever can access that potential the fastest and most effective will have great influence over space industries in other countries. It is simply imperative to nurture this growing industry to reap the benefits that could help much more people later, than just sending extra scraps to them now.
