Why do people spend billions on high speed rail instead of dead straight low incline freight rail? Most of the economy productivity of rail comes from freight, passenger rail is usually a white elephant in most countries.

If you're going to build a high speed train do it properly.

The minimum incline possible, dead straight, buy and demolish everything in the way like you're supposed to, one permanent straight line between major cities, the most efficient land transport within reason.
