Now that Musk has kicked off the new-space movement there are plenty of previous fans of space exploration that advocated defunding the military to give it to NASA who're now hostile.

They're hostile by saying that we need to fix the problems on earth.

Those who say they would use the DoD money on NASA are liars, they would funnel the defense money into their own pockets through social programs, or other wise they would be for draining social programs to "invest into the future".

Now that Space will be led by the private industry the previous fans are outraged because it's no longer an exclusive club of hand picked government employees that get to go into space.

The previous fans were alright with the exclusiveness because they knew that even the well off couldn't get access to space, but now that the window has been greatly lowered so that in the near future the upper middle class could afford to go to Mars they now exhibit extreme outrage fulled by jealousy.

If we were to discover single cell life forms on mars that is alive, these jealous individuals will demand that we ban people from visiting mars even if it meant we ban rovers as well because decontamination is never perfect.
