Im on my last year of physics PhD, I havent been to 4chan for about 2-3 years and I come to this thread. Nice.

Anyway, Im doing PhD in Europe and me and my friends are really amazed about your story. Each one of us consecutively makes deans list, we all have some grants and I have 10 papers (3 of them I consider quite good).
Additionally I do some pop-sci writing, even had an interview for local tv.

What Im getting at is that thanks to these efforts, lots of conference talks (12 so far) I already have postdoc lined up (abroad) and job proposal when I finish PhD (in my country but have to move, its good thing though).

All is based on merit, no nepotism needed.
Maybe its easier in Europe than in US (it certainly is not as "rat-race"y as US is) but still... today at Uni I heard a story about a guy who went to computing after some postdocs, worked only 1 week out of 4 for few months and got fired but is welcome if he gets his shit together. And all of this is in 300k city near the border of east Europe, so really, nothing compared to US.
