>Would you suggest using the military as a path to getting a degree?

i was pretty much in your exact same situation when i joined the military. its worth it, but you have to be smart about it to really maximize the benefit. apply for scholarships even though you are getting the GI bill. milk the Pell Grant. knock out as many classes you can while you are still in the military, come out of pocket if you have to. the GI bill will carry you through a masters (maybe a PhD?) if you can do that.

>What are job prospects like following service?

depends. believe it or not, some employers see vets as "damaged goods". thats why they are protected under affirmative action and other equal opportunity laws. the veterans advocate at my school literally told me to make my resume read like i was never in the military at all, and when asked i should say " i worked for the government" . at best employers are going to treat your military time like a 4 year super internship and not as any kind of real experience. you are still "Entry Level" no matter what you did during your tour.

federal/DoD related jobs are a snap, but if you are going to be an engineer or other STEM professional expect to be underpaid and overworked, at least for the first few years.

>How fit should i be before enlisting?

assuming you are about that POG life, if you can do 60 situps, 60 pushups, and run 2 miles in less than 20 minutes you are good to go.

last bit of advice. pick a MOS/Rate you will enjoy and try to have fun.
