If this is a picture of the lipid membrane, where are the membrane proteins?

The phospholipid bilayer is supposedly full of proteins. Why are they not visible in pictures? It seems like stains of the membrane should have holes or irregular shapes where the proteins are.

Am I missing something obvious?
