It was weird seeing Dune-newbies clowning on Duncan Idaho's name when the movie came out. He appears in all 6 Dune books so the name has never seemed odd to me.

Dune needs a containment general. I love Frank and all 6 books but damn, it's always the thread every day. The Banquet scene is a reader's favorite for overall I would say. If you can't take the "boring stuff" then you probably should stop with this book. Luckily you are about to get more action scenes and weird Fremen stuff.

Follow this. It's worth reading Messiah at least as it's the shortest of all of them. If you hate it, you can stop there, and if you like it, you may as well continue. Don't bother with any of the Brian Herbert/Kevin J Anderson books.

My views have changed over the years. I would have originally gone with option 2, but after a reread years later I'd now go with option 4. God Emperor especially is a book that I found tedious on the first read, but was mesmerised on the second read.
