What does /lit/ think about Dune?

I've never read any of them, and a friend told me only the first book of the ones written by Frank is good, and then they rapidly go downhill, and told me to stay far, far away from the ones his son wrote.

I really thought at least the original ones are all good, but he says they get too "philosophical" and "preachy".

How true is this? Also share experiences reading these, and the books following the original hexalogy.

I read the first one, don't really have any desire to read any more. Very cool story...really bad writing and execution. It feels like a bullied 14 year old wrote everything. It's annoying that someone is ritualistically killed with a knife every two pages.

God Emperor is the best and the only one worth reading

I actually like edginess in my books, even if it's seemingly adolescent.
Loved all the Conan stories, so somebody getting ritualistically murdered with a knife every two pages, is actually a turn on.

I can't just start with the fourth in the series, it's a personal defect of mine that I have to retroactively experience everything leading up to a certain point (even works that inspired the original work that I was supposed to read/watch/play etc.).

So yeah, I guess I'm going in.

Wish me luck anons

The first book deserves it's acclaim. I haven't read the others.

it's kind of odd how everyone who ever reviewed the book disagrees with you. i suspect they weren't trolling for attention, though.

Herbert's prose is good among sci-fi authors. I have a pain in my heart for Jodorovsky's film that was never completed. Salvador Dali as the emperor of the universe would have been sublime. Fat Orson Welles as Baron Harkonen would have been cash.

my good, then the other dude dont even try, herberts writes like a mongoloid.

The syntax of your comment aside: have you read Assimov? Herbert is great in comparison. One-off schlock sci-fi is even worse.

Iv'e only really read Gibson for sci-fi. Prose in that genre is limited.

God Emperor is when the series gets preachy, but it preaches the truth. The environmental message of the first one isn't very preachy. God Emperor is literally soliloquy after soliloquy of why liberals are retarded and then plot related stuff about oppressing people. It actually manages to be pretty clever despite inserting political views. It helps that I agree with him though.

The setting is really interesting but the characters are pretty boring. Drops off in quality when Leto dies and the focus shifts to Paul.
