I live in Southern California and have a severe problem with sweat getting into my eyes.

Give me a good reason why I shouldn't wear a bandanna.

Also, DFW general. TPK > IJ

yeah you could wear a bandana but it would look a bit weird in 2017. maybe a sweatband would look better.

also I've only read IJ and brief interviews (I loved them both), where do i go next?

If you're a spic, you could probably pull it off. Otherwise, don't.

You're not sincere enough for bandana.

I read Brief Interviews and wasn't so keen on it. There were some great short stories and interviews and then there were short stories that - for me - really hurt the cohesion of the book and my own enjoyment too. If I feel like this, would I still enjoy Infinite Jest or is it that DFW just isn't my cup of tea?

He was trying to bite the 1990's pussy overflow from Anthony Kiedis. Pic related. They both were compelling wordsmiths, as well.

I don't know why he recommended The Plant Trillaphon. Wallace wrote it while he was an undergrad and it's really only interesting if you've already read most of his actually good stuff.

Good Old Neon is one of his best, though. Also maybe try some of his essays.
