As for my favourite book thus far, I think it's going to bring some flack my way, but what odds; here goes.

Sharpe's Trafalgar by Bernard Cornwell

I like it because I discovered it when I was in a bad place in my life, it was the first novel that introduced me to the character Richard Sharpe and the author Bernard Cornwell as well as the book that got me interested in the Napoleonic Wars. It had a lot of terminology I didn't understand but that simply gave me a drive to learn more. The description was great, the character development, the pacing... there were comedic points, sad points, of course a fair amount of action once things got going. Different aspects that helped establish the time of the early 1800s. I already had a love of history, but this novel got me into it even more.

Ultimately I've read about... oh... 18 Bernard Cornwell novels? Quite a bit of inspiration came from his work to finally start writing, to finally do what I've wanted to do for years and years; publish a book. Granted, it's not a subject matter anything like what he typically touches on, but I still managed to do it, and then published a second one, now I'm working on a third. It's just a shame that now I think I spend more time writing/editing than I do reading. Still, I absolutely love it, and I know that I'll be writing for possibly the rest of my life, as long as I can come up with things worth writing about. I'd also like to try writing a non-fiction book someday.

I don't know if this has suddenly got more popular on /lit/ or if I'm just noticing it mentioned more because I recently read it but I've seen an unusual amount of threads about it recently. I love it - extra because I also went to a Jesuit school and so much of his experience reminded me of my own (minus the corporal punishment, thankfully). It's in this weird place where the prose can get incredibly dense and yet it is incredibly raw and faithful to personal experience. I think most writers these days who try to capture something similar go for super simplistic prose a la A Million Little Pieces or something. It is also the first book I've read where I had to pause and underline sentences / entire paragraphs that I found so utterly beautiful - beautiful enough to take me out of the story and go 'fuck'.
