Melville was fixated on free will, revenge and wrath. He worked from Shakespeare (predominantly Lear), Paradise Lost (much of Ahab is lifted from Satan), the Old Testament, and Pseudodoxia Epidemica for the encyclopedic parts. You can read it just fine without having read any of these, though - or you could easily read them all at the same time.
