He looks like a super serious guy, like how I image I'd look if I were a aristocrat that gave up his fortune to teach philosophy and spank kids for getting math problems wrong. He's Austrian, and I have Austrian blood in me, so I like to think of him as me and me as him. He represents the blood in my veins. Out of all the philosophers, he looks cutest :3 I don't know anything about his philosophy besides that he was good a maths and logics, so it had to be right. Plus he Austrian like my great grandma, like me. I am Wittgenstein, I am God philosopher. Pic related - look at the board behind him. He probably just erased some wicked math problems, or maybe it's art. See, you can't really tell. Either way he was genius.

No, Quine, Popper, Austin, and Kripke came after him.

He however is the last philosopher to be romanticized. He has an interesting history.

>> No.8595624

No, he was at best a could've been, though he definitely had the mind and writing ability for it. His abilities were ultimately wasted dealing with the banal problems that arose out of the analytical split and the the fetishistic disavowal of hundreds of years of philosophical work. Instead of doing any interesting work he spent his efforts righting the course of the analytical ship, as it had been mis-captained by Russell and his contemporaries. Only in that context did he achieve greatness, but not in the context of philosophy overall. His only considered a genius because of the Anglo-american (the only people who majorly identify with analytic philosophy) hegemonic center of the world today, which is funny considering he was a gay Austrian with a supposed liking for Catholicism.

He was the last philosopher of note, yes.

Philosophy needs another Copernican Revolution. Something tells me it'll come from quantum physics, which seems to undermine positivism/materialism with each progression.

you could always just go in head first and play the rest by ear regarding guides and supplementary stuff to understand him. if you're really serious though, get a solid base in western philosophy, read a little about the man himself for some context, get some kind of companion or read along with a reliable analysis. it's unlikely you'll do any of it anyway, but there you go.
you also need to be pretty clever and have a will of frickin iron to really get what he's about.

Read Tractatus first.

Fuck anyone who says to begin elsewhere.

Start with Tractatus. Then read Philosophical Investigations. Then read Ray Monk's bio on Witty. Then, if you want more, read the Brown/Blue books and other essays he wrote.

higher standard of living, longer lifespans, overcoming disease, exploring space, colonizing space, increasing energy flux density, developing technology transportation, etc.

pretty much getting more from and expanding the same processes we already have in place to solve problems and overcome obstacles for all.
