If you're 21, go to the Leon Pub on 6th Ave. Small dive with a huge beer selection (something like 3 dozen on tap, and 450+ in the bottle, always new stuff with both), and a great clientele. If you go close to closing time on a weekday, look for a skinny, somewhat older dude in a hat at the bar. He's usually there after about 1:15/1:30 unless he's on a trip for work (he's a biologist who works for the state on fishing and shrimping boats). Strike up a conversation with him, you can talk literature with him forever. He's read a huge portion of "the canon" and turned me on to a lot of other good reads like Jerzy Kosinksi's The Painted Bird and Bruce Chatwin's In Patagonia.

How does kik work? I'm very bad at technology, I only just learned how to do email on my phone last week. I thought maybe we could meet at McLeod's or something, but apparently some anons in NY did this and it was extremely awkward. They just sat and browsed /lit/ on their phones and didn't speak to one another.

I was born in Manitoba, but moved to BC when I was young, so I don't really remember daily life. OR here, so I always shop at Half-Price books. You should check out the Shakespeare in the Bar (I think it's called?) at the Wild Detectives bookstore, or really Wild Detectives in general. I know it gets shit on here but I don't have a desk in my room and my apartment here is crowded so I always am reading in cafes here in France, I wish I had done it more in Dallas just because it's a good way to meet people and the ambience actually makes the reading/ writing a little more enjoyable too.

The flagship HPB is the best place to buy books, hands down. I have been to bookstores with a better ambience (the place is practically a warehouse) but that is the best bookstore for used selection I have ever been to in the world. Recycled in Denton to the north is really cool, refurbed opera house, big selection. Highly recommend. Also if you're in Denton, right near there is a cool cocktail bar where alot of cute girls hang called Paschall Bar. You might find it a little hipster but it's a college town.

I went to SMU (on a full scholarship, I don't come from a rich as fuck family haha) but if you have free time, go checkout the libraries there. There is a Gutenberg Bible that is sometimes available to the public in Bridwell (my favorite) and always neat scrolls from medieval era Islam, Christianity and Judaism. There are beautiful libraries all over campus.

Premiere Video has great foreign films and they often will have a poster with arthouse releases that aren't available on Netflix so you can find some really avant-garde and unique films there.

The DMA doesn't compare to the Met, MOMA, or any of the museums in Paris to any degree but it is an impressive collection and they have great events like late nights with jazz and wine, and the permanent exhibition is free (and when I say impressive I really mean it). It is a really good place to bring a first date, even if it's not at night. I think I've brought every girl I've been with in Dallas there at some point.

Oh and Lucky Dog books on Garland Road is a neat little bookstore too. It's a decent collection but small, it's also really cheap.

Dallas is a cool city. I miss it sometimes. I hope you enjoy having moved there.

>> No.8584422

>>8584406
Oh another thing, the art museum at SMU is cheap and if you're a student there I believe it's free and they specialize in Spanish art. I've seen Goya sketches on temporary exhibitions there and pretty impressive stuff for a college library.

Also you should check out the Angelika Theater, and the Magnolia for films. They specialize in foreign and art house and have events. The sister theater to the Magnolia, the Inwood, has a really cool bar that plays great music and has really good martinis.

If my posts are repetitive it's because it's 1:30 here and I had a long weekend with friends.

I take it you're an Evergreen student then? I'd say The Reef downtown is pretty great, it's open til 4am and has a sort of dingy classic diner vibe while still being actually decent in the food department..

I enjoy Pad Thai and there's a million good thai places here, you almost can't go wrong.

Orca Books downtown is dope. There are several good parks, Priest Point Park is almost downtown, the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge is near lacey and is awesome, and Tolmie State park is my favorite ocean-y place here.

I also recommend seeing a show downtown. Even if it's just shitty shitty punk, it's a good time. Go to Rainy Day Records, it's awesome.

Nope, haha. Not in college.

I haven't been to pretty much anywhere in Washington (not even Seattle) so far so I appreciate the suggestions! The Reef seems so /comfy/ -- I wanna spend the wee hours of a Friday night there reading a book.

The only bookstore I've ever frequented has been B&N. I know it's pretty pleb (no bully), but I've never really had a need to go to any other stores, especially with my membership. I'll give Orca Books a go this weekend, though. Hoping to explore downtown for the first time anyway.

damn yeah I fucking love this state and Cascadia as a whole.

Downtown is really neat, there's a decent amount of variety, antique shops, a couple theaters, good bars, record stores, restaurants, stuff like that. It gets sketchy at night though and we just disbanded the nightly police patrol because of budgetary restrictions (lol).

that's funny, the I-5 in the image is referring to I-594, a ballot initiative that would have instated a universal background check for buying guns. It failed I think, I don't really give a shit about guns though, I just liked the rest of the image.

that's a good q... I read The Crying of Lot 49 by Pynchon most recently and I really liked it. I really just read books that people suggest I guess, now that I think about it. In the past couple months I read TCOL49, Lolita, The Man in the High Castle, Siddartha, Catch 22, Heart of Darkness, On the Commonwealth (by Cicero), Master of the Senate (a biography of LBJ), Consider the Lobster, and a shit ton of books about soccer (Soccernomics, The Ball is Round, Those Feet, Numbers Game, Twelve Yards, Rock N' Roll Soccer). So it really varies. I should prolly join a book club or something now that you mention it

Seattle's really great too, I fucking love the Sounders, you should go to a game if you can. We have two left this regular season if you're really inclined.

if you ever find yourself in Miami (G*d forbid) theres quite a few book stores, new and used. There's Books & Books which has the best selection and can order almost anything for you. Bookstore in The Grove has a nice cafe and is very quiet with nice seating and lighting to read by, the Salvation Army and the Bargain Bin are right next to each other and I've found some gems in there practically new for dirt cheap.

I visit Halifax often, but unfortunately I won't be visiting again until next year. January or February

If you're up for it, want to reply with a throwaway? We can chat a bit about lit stuff and see if we'd still like to meet up sometime
