Evangelion as a whole was shit. Dumb plot, random religious and philosophical messages/symbols that make little or no sense in context of the story, badly written or just plain unlikable characters and somehow their still making movies about the fucking thing. The only good thing about the series as a whole (show/movies/manga, etc.) was the Angel fights, which you can get out of anything involving mecha.

I unironically think that Attack on Titan would have been Hunger Games or even Harry Potter tier if it had been written by an English author without any retarded anime tropes. Dystopian world, teenagers saving the day, characters are in an institution so there can be pubescent drama, Hogwarts House-like categorizations, le rich people are evil fitting in so naturally. Generally people mean different things when they use those words. I've seen Humbert Humbert brought up as an example of an 'unlikable' character, but he's only such that you wouldn't want to encounter him in real life. Reading his narration is fascinating, and precisely because of this is he a relateable character who's feelings are at least possible to sympathize with, even if he's disagreeable as a person.
