How do you deal with being a literal patrician?
Is it even possible to relate to others and have friends?
I went out with my so called 'friends' today and i decided for myself that i can no longer live my life with them. I am superior in every way and i don't even feed my ego with it or anything because i'm so smart to know that i am not the ego.
I can't relate to anyone i feel like i'm the only adult in a world of children.
I would love to have high consciousness friends but i would not know where to search for them.
I'm so sick of having different taste than everyone.

>inb4 people telling me using the word patrician unironically is retarded
I would not know how else to describe myself.

If you're beyond your ego then you should be able to see that treating others with kindness is always the best route. Your friends may be less intellectual than you but I'm sure they have your back and care about you which is all that really counts. In the meantime, however, try looking into local clubs and groups that you could join to meet like-minded individuals. You can even start your own group -- the internet is a great resource for networking.

About Benning:
Yes it's more like photography but with the addition of time.
It's a lot easier to watch at a cinema or at an installation where you can move around in the room and look at it as long as you like to compared to having to sit there looking at your computer screen for half an hour to an hour.
I believe not the films are the problem but the sensory overload/addiction of modern society. This is what i believe he is trying to compensate for to an extent.

If you "played the game of life and won" as you say, you wouldn't be here asking this question. All religions and schools of thought can be traced back to Hermeticism. I'm fairly certain that Taoism can be traced back to the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. In your hubris you have become blind to your shortcomings. Eugh. I really hope this is just a story you made up to shitpost on lit, but I've seen this enough IRL to know not to hope too hard.

I saw a movie on TV with Paul Rudd, of all people, that captured this really well.

Rudd plays a character who owns a small record label c. 2010s. He's really passionate about 90s-style slowcore like Red House Painters, etc., so he signs bands like that. His label remains small because of this, but it sticks to his principles and tastes.

His bitch wife, on the other hand, fucking freaks out at him for not enjoying Nikki Minaj and signing some pop idol to make money. She claims he's pretentious and his music is depressing. I didn't watch much of this, but I think she even fucking leaves or kicks him out over this.

Like, how fucking twisted is this? Instead of supporting your partner's tastes and love, you fucking turn on them because you consider them "pretentious" or "smug". It's disgusting.

It's a true story, and thankfully my wife is self-aware enough to know that this type of bullshit is petty and only serves to mask her insecurities (she's admitted as much to me). She regularly admits how fucking absurd she can be and how crazy women in general are.

Also, I don't really give a shit about her plebness, but what pisses me off is when she tries to throw it in my face as if I'm being an asshole about simply discussing one of my only true passions in life (literature).

Anyways, I get this reaction from some friends too, who find it so offensive that I would dare hold the opinion that certain works of fiction are objectively better than others. When I ask them to explain why something like Stephen King or John Green is on the same level as Faulkner or Melville or Dante they always revert to the same retarded MUH ART IS SUBJECTIVE argument.

I literally can't express how much better my life has been since I attended Oxford. I went to a state school and gradually became the stereotypical moody, withdrawn sensitive type who both despises the quality of his immediate culture and feels a weird pride for having been raised in a sort of anti-intellectual and brutal environment. I was all set to take my Russell Group humanities BA and spend my life working as an anonymous, insecure wageslave forever thankful of being offered a job and forever too insecure to pursue my creative ambitions. The chip on my shoulder had become something of a wedge, and I felt too out of place regardless of my environment, too resentful and bitter to even attempt to make it in the artistic world. Then I finally applied for Oxford and got in to study an English MA, with reassurance that should I work hard enough a career in academia or within one of Oxford's affiliated companies would be almost guaranteed. I turned up as apprehensive as usual, and the first few days were spent regretting my decision and desperately feigning a cultured personality. But then I realized that the people there were just interesting and that the snobbery and exclusivity I had anticipated was just a myth borne out of my working class upbringing. I've since graduated, having spend the year dining in grand halls with groups of interesting people, dating several girls (one of whom, a petite Russian whose family traces back to the aristocracy, is now my fiancee). I work four days a week at a publishing company and earn £38k a year. I regularly meet up with friends from my college and visit Oxford for nights out and for meetings with my professors.

Hutton is like Benning except with the disadvantage of using faster cuts but the advantage of not using sound and arguably being less political. Check out 'At Sea' and 'Three Landscapes', they're his best.
Ancestors is good but I feel like with Colour of Pomegranates and Ashik Kerib Parajanov really perfected his unique style.
Turin Horse I like for the same reason, it is everything that makes Tarr great for me but really condensed and perfected.
Same with Zerkalo. It was Tark and Rerberg working together at their best. Though Rublev I love too, probably my 2nd favourite of his.

Yes i've seen all of Sukurovs films. My favourite one is Russian Ark because of the one-take and choreography/visuals. I can't believe somebody made a movie like this. Absolutely amazing.

Peter B Hutton
my absolute fav sokurov is Spiritual Voices, though he has loads of great films. The one with the painting is Elegy of a Voyage.
sorry, kg stopped doing invites after the site was attacked a few months ago. How did you manage to get all of Benning's films without being on kg (and i assume ptp too). Did you see Pig Iron at a festival or something?

Why is it his responsibility to provide and understanding of art for her own? It's not the patrician's duty to lift the spirits of the pleb.

>How do you deal with being a literal patrician?

if you have to ask...then trust me you ARE NOT a patrician.

dude...consider this. what if it's the new norm to feel like you can't relate and have "unique" tastes? that's because everyone seems normal until you get to know them well.

the reality is you're oblivious to yourself. that's the new normal. not being "patrician."

people like op...thinking he's unique is ridiculous because these people are a dime a dozen nowadays. they have no idea how common they really are.

recently they've invented an art measuring tool to grade quality. it's not cheap but at least you can skip bad art with a quick reading from the device.

Art is subjective.

art is both subjective and objective. if it were purely subjective people wouldn't bother discussing it. literature wouldn't be taught. any art curriculum in school would be pointless.

This.

Anon inadvertently made her feel like an idiot. That is why she was lashing out at him. He did it from a place of genuine passion and a desire to teach her something about literature, but when the conversation was long past and he went back to reading his complex literature that he understands both emotionally and critically, she went back to her YA that she doesn't even understand critically. Then she is left feeling like an idiot.

The poor bastard didn't see that it was a no win scenario for him. If he refused to open up about something that is hugely important to him when his own wife asked and really wanted to know then she can call him guarded and pretentious, or if he gives a detailed answer and she struggles to still understand she goes into denial and writes it all of as pretentiousness to cope.

Anon was fucked either way. But this is what happens when you try to talk serious lit with a YA reader. He knows better now.

we're all giant babies. you can walk around acting like you're 62 in your head but you're just torturing yourself and probably those around you.
you should always approach life with a child-like wonder. you don't have to change what you think in any way, it's simply about how you approach life. the world can be a playground or a battlefield it's your choice.
