There were so many literary allusions in Lost it was nuts. I miss the days of scouring the internet for clues about what it all meant.

>Carmela Soprano: Don't say that! God forgive you!
>Anthony Junior: There is no God.
>Carmela Soprano: Ey!!
>Tony Soprano: Ey!!
>Carmela Soprano: Where is this coming from?
>Tony Soprano: Do they teach you this crap in school??
>Carmela Soprano: Is this that new English teacher Mr. Clark...emm... Where is he from? Answer me!
>Meadow Soprano: Overland.
>Meadow Soprano: You want him to read anything other than Hustler? Hello. He got assigned ˝The Stranger˝ You want him to be an educated person? What do you think education is? You just make more money? This IS education.
>Anthony Junior: Do you ever think like: Why were we born?
>Meadow Soprano: Madame de Stael said: In life one must choose between boredom and suffering.
>Tony Soprano: Go to your room! (Meadow leaves)
>Anthony Junior: No, I'm serious. Why were we born?
>Carmela Soprano: We were born because of Adam and Eve, that's why. Now go upstairs and do your math.
>Anthony Junior: Algebra?? That's the most boring.
>Tony Soprano: Well, your other choice is sufferin'. You wanna start now?!?

desu the aesthetic of LOST was pretty profound
i think the show peaked when they found the crashed plane at the end of a question mark and they were just like whats goin on with the hatches

it was a really good mix of imagery and themes

then it went on too long and fizzled out

How they managed to turn that trite source material into the best show on television I have no idea, especially the 3rd season in florence. They somehow made a polymath genius somehow not seem like an insufferable autist, blending the literary/musical/artistic allusions into not only the plot and characters but the way scenes were shot and composed was A1.

indeed, The Knick was great with its visual language. i think many of the posters here are confusing shows where they show actors reading books as literary in scope. shows like Mad Men, The Knick, hell, even Downton Abbey are more literary than Lost, Hannibal, and Skins. those are more sci-fi, horror/suspense, and YA, than actual literature.

Downton Abbey is a soap opera. The only show mentioned that is truly literary is Mad Men, of course visual media doesn't have to aspire to literariness to be good as it is working in an entirely different medium so it's not a qualitative judgement so much as a thematic style. Mad Men was a show focused on characters, themes and subtext far more than "plot" which makes it literary in comparison to a pulpy serial like Breaking Bad or Lost.
