Hi lit, do you make notations in your book as you read (or re-read)? I see this sometimes with other people, and i remember my lit. prof. doing it as well. What would be things to notate? Does it help grasping underlying motives? Any general insight is appreciated.

i just underline interesting passages or write notes in the margins like what he's referencing or who he's talking about.

I do but I hate getting a used book with someone's notes since they never provide insight it just explains what the book just said.

I may use a VERY light pencil to underline things. If I need to take notes, it's because I have to write a paper which involves the book, in that case I keep a separate notebook/file with notes of the different books I use when writing the paper.

I don't make notes on the pages themselves because I don't like marking up my books, but I'll usually grab a piece of lined paper and make a few notes after each chapter or so. Then I'll fold the paper up and use it as a bookmark. Once you get a few pages completed, you can just staple them together.
