3 steps to getting better at anything

1.Do something
2.Reflect on it
3.Repeat from step 1

Step 1 is the one that a lot of dreamers miss. Step 2 is the one that a lot of amateurs miss.

In your logic you wouldn't have to read the work of others to be able to write well.

An english degree may help. I stress "May". It can't hurt, but it won't necessarily help.

Reading and writing more is the only way you'll do it. Maybe an english degree can set you on the path of that, but writing is a solitary skill that's self taught.

Well, unless you want to write a modern update of Beowulf recasting the protagonist as a transgender PoC activist, an English degree is kind of unnecessary.

I don't see how it could hurt... I mean, there are no real rules per se, you just have to find what's best for you to convey what you want to say. It helps to know which conventions to break though, so again - I don't see how it could hurt.

The best way to go about it is just to write all the time. Just write anytime you can and if you feel it's not enough for you to improve, or if you can't motivate yourself in that way and still want to pursue this, taking a degree that makes you write and read analytically all the time will help you a lot.

I'm not a writer or english major or anything like that, that's just my go-to advice to anyone interested in pursuing arts. Enough will and you can be a self-taught anything these days...

Just remember that sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at it

I dunno, if that's your thing. Some writers value that, others completely throw that out the window and wouldn't even know what you're talking about if you brought it up.

I tend to think all that is really overthinking things, but if some people like to do that.

There's no set path, or plan on how to be a writer. Every writer is different, and you'll find that the only person who can answer all these questions is yourself.
