I really liked "Play It As It Lays," her writing is SO barebones though I kind of feel like I need a little more detail in what I read. Her essays are very good. Spiritual godmother to Ellis and Tao Lin

The first part is really damn good, the second part is nice, third is forgettable. Still interested in reading more didion.

I don't find her stuff sparse, just a bit calculated and bowing to her journalistic leanings. There's a difference between her and say raymond carver.
And she's nothing like Tao Lin or bee, holy shit man just cause you've read 5 authors doesn't mean you can center your worldview around them.

The White Album is better, but Slouching is a good intro to her works, both fiction and not. Her trademark pessimism and far-ranging scope are still underscored by a hint of first (nonfiction) book. It shows that these were collected from various sources, but her next few will have more cohesion.
That said, it's her most personal and Comrade Laski is straight up absurdist slapstick.
