I never had problems with Amazon, and my old Kindle still works fine, but got damn they fucked up the new PW.

Nah, that's an OCR error of the original and it's not caused by EPUB->MOBI conversion.

You can convert them just fine with Calibre. Or you could even do it online by googling epub2mobi. It does pretty transparent conversions from my short experience with it (I use Calibre).

I have a kobo; I just transferred my epubs across and I haven't had a problem. Battery lasts for about 2 weeks using it a couple of hours a day. Never had any eyestrain, never had to convert files.

That's what I use, never had a problem with it.

How would you know if you had a problem though? Mostly, how would you know if a scene or section breaks were kept in the conversion?

>> No.7029033

It's not a problem and when I pirate books most of them are already in .mobi format. It's a little bit overpriced but a nice device overall. It doesnt have to be a Kindle, but make sure you are getting an e-reader with a backlight, it might get really uncomfortable to read it even on Paperwhite if you are in a shadow or in a room without lots of light. They are slightly harder to read than regular books because of that. You will be fine if you have bright light when you read, though

Do the new ones strain the eyes? I really liked the screen on the old ones since they were always so easy to use.

>> No.7029047

>>7029037
They new ones have plastic screen, the old ones were glass ones IIRC

>> No.7029054

>>7029037
why would they if they're all e-ink? the backlight is very very subtle.

I own a Paperwhite and it's never strained my eyes, except on the occasions I'll read in bed in a completely dark room for 4 hours straight until morning.

At any rate, I've read that all the Voyage has is physical or pseudo physical buttons and a higher DPI. Don't think it should have any effect on your eyes.

Dude's right but I really doubt that the pros of the voyage are worth the extra cash, even if money is not an issue.
I'd go with the newest Paperwhite.
Download and open up Calibre if you haven't yet. It's friendly enough (with a Windows2000 feel to me) that there's no way in which you'd ever encounter any trouble converting .epub to .mobi.

The touchscreen of the Paperwhite has annoyed me so much now that I'm considering a Voyage

>wipe off a hair
>OH YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR FONT SIZE?
>sleepily go forward a page
>OH YOU WANT TO GO BACK?

I'm exaggerating but it's annoying. I'd say about 5-10% of my touchscreen interactions do something unintended, most of the time going back. Plus I could hold the old 3G and flip a page, both with one hand, that doesn't work with the Paperwhite but should work with the Voyage..

Is there any good recent ereader without touchscreen?

I hate putting touchscreens on everything. Hopefully the fad dies out soon. Literally useless in everything except phones or pads

You're worse. At least the money is going to the people that made the thing when you buy an ereader. When you buy a book the author's long dead more often than not. Your shekels go straight to the Jews without any of the work.

Jailbreak your kindle and put an epub reader on it. Takes about 10 minutes and isn't difficult.

Once you've jailbrocken you can also install an alternate OS. Duokan works pretty well and reads epubs by default. I've done it on my old kindle v3. Its a little trickier than jailbreaking, but not by a large amount.

nook is decent. I got a kobo because I wanted the foreign language dictionary capability without rooting (which I did but just too many fucking screens and other unpolished bug issues not to mention fucking the battery life) and I miss the touch buttons though it took like a day to get used to.

Really though nook isn't as fancy as the new kindles and kobos but to me it seems like all the technology you could ever need to make a great e-reader was available like 5 years ago, everything past that is just trying to get you to buy new, more expensive shit. Also nooks are cheap as fuck.

Yeah but how can you show people how intellectually superior you are with patrician tier novels on a bookshelf in your living room when all you have are ebooks?

True enough, but then again you've got to consider that the Voyage has a touchscreen nonetheless.

You're not entirely saved from that issue unless your e-reader functions exclusively with physical buttons, but as we all know, that's only available on the older generations.
I don't personally dislike touchscreens as much as you guys seem to.
Hell, I'm all in for it.

I don't have any problem with my Kobo's touchscreen and even then, if a false move happens and an unintended actions occurs, you can just as easily click back to the centre of the device to bring it back as it were.

I usually read on the e-reader with my thumbs more or less around the edge of the device though, far enough from the screen, so that may be helpful to know.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeh
