Is a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's stories and poems worth a buy? I'm generally looking for short stories with paranormal elements? Does Poe write about these or does he only write about murder cases?

(pic unrelated)

He actually wrote relatively few horror and paranormal stuff. Most of his short stories are mysteries

What are they like? Is it just like Doyle where it's a basic murder story or is their non-murder mysteries? Are the mysteries at least ambiguous or spooky enough to let the reader question as to what happened or is it just your usual "here's the killer" type story?

The latter. I've only read Raven and Black Cat by him and they were very ambiguous (lots of symbolism), creepy and slightly insane.

Buy it.

Mostly psychological renderings of crime.

Typical: >Cask of Amantillado

Some macabre tales

Typical: Masque of the Red Death

Some first person horror/suspense

Typical: Pit and the Pendulum

Other highlights include the much-anthologized Tell Tale Heart, and I would include the Purloined Letter and Murders in the Rue Morgue as inventing the modern police procedural. Imp of the Perverse should be required reading for writers of anything intrigue.

Shouold add the only two supernatural stories of note are the Black Cat and Ligeia, though Ligeia can really screw you up, provided a disposition for the romantic.

Well....a lot of them aren't very good. A lot read kind of like Hardy boys adventures.

His horror stuff is definitely his best, I think his best mystery one would be The murder at the rue morgue....but a lot of people would say even that isn't very good.

Most of them are none murder mysteries. Like The gold bug, which is basically a kid trying to find his missing mentor and solving a super awesome mystery in the process.

Most of them are NOT spooky.

Poe's stories and poems are definitely worth a buy, some of them aren't that great but others are just fantastic.

Penguin has a Portable Poe with stories, poems, essays, criticism, letters.
Try googling before making a thread.

Why don't you actually read the post before commenting, faggot?

He knows that complete versions of his works exist, he's asking if it's worth buying.
