Right next door to you, east side. You can get them for under a dollar in Thailand, even including farrang tax. Over here they range from $1.50 for a packet of 555 or Mevius to $1 for ten packets of Liberty -- they come in those cheap flimsy foil packets.

Cigarettes in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as you may have noticed, are a mini status symbol. Men want to be seen smoking the expensive ones, and nobody other than rural farmers would want to be seen with the cheapest. Have you ever seen people buying just five or six expensive cigarettes, for example? I kinda get away with it for being white, but nobody will accept a cigarette from me if I'm smoking a cheap brand.

Another common trick the locals pull is to hide cheap cigarettes inside an expensive packet just to give the illusion that they are smoking 'the best'.

People are living to be too old in my opinion. Even if I smoke consistently the same amount I have for years, real health problems other than chronic bronchitis won't affect me until I'm at least in my 40s at the earliest. If I die at 50 I'd be quite satisfied. There's no real reason to live to 90, as I see it.
