ITT: We discuss the Star Wars Expanded Universe

Now, I wouldn't try to argue that this belongs in a discussion of literature, but on the same token there is no real discussion of "books" that aren't pretending to be literature. I read literature surely but I also realize that reading can also be entertainment: I do not believe we must completely ignore books that don't have value as literature (why then would you read Lord of the Rings?)

I am moderately interested in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and I am not ashamed to say so. I think that reading about the Clone Wars, the Mandalorians, and the Sith is very rewarding. I suppose what I am obtaining from this is "entertainment," but it's really just an extension of the kind of entertainment I would find from watching the movies. You might argue there is no reason to watch the movies either, but nevertheless.

Let's talk about the Star Wars Expanded Universe. What is your favorite book or books in it? Your favorite author? I very much like the Republic Commando series. I loved the game when I was a teenager and I still think they're good books. I'm re-reading the first. Never finished the second, and I see there are many more too.

SW:EU thread.

I liked that book that had a lightsaber and a bunch of contrived melodrama in it

God Tier (these books are respectable sci-fi regardless of their connection to Star Wars):
The Thrawn Trilogy
The Courtship of Princess Leia
Tatooine Ghost

High Tier:
Star by Star (avoid the entire New Jedi Order series though)
X-Wing (all books)
The Han Solo Trilogy
Tales from Jabba's Palace

Mid Tier:
The Jedi Academy Trilogy
The Truce at Bakura
The Hand of Thrawn Duology

Low Tier:
Rebel Dream
Rebel Stand
The Medstar Duology

Shit Tier:
The Black Fleet Crisis

Avoid At All Costs Tier:
The Crystal Star
Barbara Hambly

I stopped reading shortly after the Dark Nest, so this isn't comprehensive, but the New Republic era books are pretty much the only good ones anyway.

I'm 24, grew up during the hegemony of the prequel trilogy. As a result, my base is oriented in books rooted in this time. Thus, I prefer Clone Wars-era books. They're good.

Shatterpoint is really the only one I remember being good besides Medstar that has to do with the Clone Wars. I avoided listing prequel era books because they are even more formulaic than the new republic and empire era.

Also I forgot to mention Shadows of the Empire which should be in High tier.

Thrawn Trilogy is the GOAT

I last read those when I was like...12 or13
a reread will happen at some point

>> No.6685541

> People mentioning The Thrawn Trilogy

You need to go reread it. Every scene with Han and Leia is fucking horrible and the book can't go three pages without referencing the original trilogy.

Oh god, I loved these books so much. Hit me with a lot of nostalgia. Grand Admiral Thrawn is my favorite book character of all time.

10/10 would recommend

Pick up Tales from Jabba's Palace, Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina, or Tales of the Bounty Hunters. They are short story anthologies that are really pretty sorrowful.

I've never read one, but Thrawn obviously sounds like an amazing villain. Far better than Vader.

Pic related.
>>6686345
You are correct. Thrawn was amazing because he wasn't actually a bad guy, he just believed in the Imperial doctrine over that of the New Republic and he was scary intelligent. Vader was just your regular evil wizard.

Not the list guy, but I found it very well written, with a lot of mature content and not as manichean as the rest of the Star Wars universe in general (exception maybe for KotOR II)
