Mate Tatami is deep but it's a very simple story with more or less one message. It's more character-based than anything. Baccano! is just a pretty good action show with some vague moral questions tossed in. Lain and Texhnolyze are better than both for literary merit, especially the former because it did social commentary that anime of its time (1995-2011, sekaikei type) generally avoid like the plague because of the disintegration of Japanese from Japanese society following the housing burst-bubble, 1.17 Hanshin Earthquake and sarin gas-attacks. Japanese fiction until recently focuses almost exclusively on man and the world and fellow man rather than man and society.

Kino is exceptional for the same reason.

I've pretty much stopped watching anime, I seldom read manga (maybe once a year). I've been checking amazon twice a year for the past 3 years if the original novel the tatami galaxy anime was adapted from was translated into english..

>I get what you mean. I liked anime as a kid and teen, but now I can't stand it. I love stuff like Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc., but now it seems like all anime is just cutesy, obnoxious crap like Lucky Star or other kinds of Moe garbage.
You probably can't even name 1 anime per year from the era you claim is better. People, mostly westerners, have been complaining about 'kawaii' anime since the 80s. These people cite about 3-5 masterpieces that were contextual products of their time and claim current anime would be like this if they stopped making 'moeshit'.

There are numerous contemporary anime that try to be serious. Most of them have even worse plots and writing than the average formulaic moe.
