Why does /lit/ hate John Green? You criticise a writer for being childish when his target audience is children. That's like criticising James Joyce because 13 year old girls might have a hard time understanding Ulysses.

Just because his books are targeted at young adults doesn't mean that they need to be dumbed down. Plenty of YA fiction has had mature themes or been more nuanced.

Tbh though, I don't think his books are that bad. I think his youtube series is full of BS though.

If only it were that simple. People in their twenties are much more likely to read YA than Joyce. I think that creates some grounds for criticizing it more stringently.

(Green is just a meme though).

It's probably just one guy trolling. /lit/ does react quite a lot to the threads featuring this YA-peddler.

It's John Green himself feeling the waters to see if he's accepted in academia yet.

Admittedly he's easy to hate. He's a dorky middle aged guy writing sentimental fiction for teenagers and some of the excerpts that get posted are really bad.

"Hello

As representative of an anonymous community famous for trolling, I would like to invite Mr Green to do a Q&A on one of the slowest boards of the website, which is also the board that hates him most.

I hope to hear from you soon

Because he's an easy target and that's the best /lit/ can do. John Green is at /lit/'s own level of intelligence.
And that's pretty honorable. I mean, wouldn't it be pretty shameful if /lit/ was actually somewhat intelligent and still attacked John Green?

>Cliché master
>White Knight

Because most, or better, all the things he writes are about the same stereotyped stories about teenagers falling in love throwing in some random bullshit (eg: cancer) to make it look deep and thoughtful. I mean, the guy has been watching and reading the same stories ever since he was the fucking kid and now he thinks that writing about the losing loser who falls in love with the hottest girl in high school is something cool and interesting that people want to read. There was also taht girl who lived the cancer story and died the some years back, and he pretends to support her cause, writes a story based on her and scores the cash.

In the end: easy writing to easy selling. But I don't care enough to hate him.

Being able to form vocalisation for a string of symbols from text and sentences doesn't mean anything if there's no real capability to interpret what you are reading.

I'm sure you can get 6 year olds who could 'read' crime and punishment (albeit with a little help on the more difficult to pronounce words) but that doesn't really mean they are understand what they are reading or can glean anything higher or more intellectual from it.

99% of the population can now read! So what - 99% of the population 'reads' trivial gossip rags and that's all they care about or are capable of 'reading'.
