It's probably a good thing I'm studying law at some regional school. If I got into Yale I'd be arrogant as fuck about it. Would you say there is a super high quality w/r/t the student population? Does that worry you? Or do people who go to Yale just not care where they rank in with their classmates?

I sort of wanted to go to school that has a bunch of dummies, so I'd shine and be in the top 5%. Do Yale students worry about that kind of thing?

>> No.6515258

I'm a poorfag who ended up doing shitty in high school due to going through a series of depression. Got a pretty average ACT score (27). I took a year off to recuperate and "find myself" essentially. For about the last year, I've done nothing but study and read. Although I feel like I've clearly changed since high school, I feel like I'm carrying a burden by my pretty bad high school career. How can I improve my chances of getting into a college I want?

Yeah I definitely think the class is pretty sharp. There really aren't any legacy morons like in the college, though I'm sure connections help at the margin.

A lot of people are definitely hyper competitive here, or just extremely driven to the point of compulsiveness. And if you want an elite clerkship or something, you have to be. But the great thing is that you don't really have to be like that - everyone here ends up with good job. That's the path I've taken. As they say, even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

Although I will say that there are definitely moments where it feels weird to realize that, for the first time, I'm not at the top of my class. But at the same time, I don't feel outclassed, and at some point it's just impossible to compare people.

Sounds great, right? No. The people there are generally self righteous mega SJW's who–and this is what's bad–still drink four loko.

If you're anything resembling normal you'll be a pariah at Parsons, if you're not 100% emasculated and spineless you'll be evaded at Lang.

I love the state of Alabama like my own mother and am always glad to see it grow, but as a senior graduating in a week, until you've seen what motivated people on the coasts do you just don't understand who runs the world. sure. this is probably gonna sound more like a butthurt anecdote than an objective account, but:

>process itself
besides the obvious shit like submitting grades, test scores, and recommendations from advisors/teachers, there's a supplementary application you need to fill out. This app requires you to:
>list personal info (date of birth, family status, other basic shit)
>list off "activities". here, an applicant gets to rattle off on whatever extracurricular shit he did thoughout HS.
>essay. the topics are vague and lend themselves to anecdotal writing.
>top unis often have supplemental essays, which range from more anecdotal bullshit to QUIRKY anecdotal bullshit to "jack off our school spirit as much as possible".

>my impressions?
tons of bullshit. first, colleges have this certain "ideal candidate"--basically a chad who is good at everything within high school. Notice how i said "everything", not "one thing": amerifat unis are drawn to this idea of generalization. Additionally, certain extracurriculars factor in more than others. Unis love sports (I know two guys who got into Harvard for football and sailing), yet they're nearly indifferent to music or creative writing. And even then, you have tons of cucks who fake extracurriculars because there's no way to verify what you have and haven't done.

And don't even get me started on the essays. according to a college counselor i know, there's this conventional formula you've got to follow: something along the lines of:
>be me
>do something
>face an obstacle
>introspect a bit
>overcome the obstacle
>realize some banal platitude about life in general

and, supposedly, it's most strategic to hone this essay in on another one of your extracurriculars (I wrote about an IT internship, for example). Now, there are outliers (know a Brown admit who wrote about doing literally nothing over the summer), but few students are bold enough to actually execute it, and even fewer have the writing ability to do it well. Most kids stick to formula, and use it as yet another opportunity to show off. And, while competition between applicants is certainly the best way to measure them against each other, it is literally impossible to quantify the profundity of a life experience or the "goodness" of an extracurricular. And even then, if you're a phenomenal prose writer, you cannot show off out of fear that admissions may not consider your essay legit; there's fairly big money in essay-forging services, given how goddamn lazy most highschoolers are and how certain parents will literally pay for anything.

It is interesting how you feel isolated at a party school. Personally, I don't feel the same way, as there seems to be plenty of different people on campus. Then again, I'm more interested in the gigantic library than them.

I got buddies going there
do the names 'Eric M, Will C, Dakota P, Tyler D, Ankha K' ring any bells for any reason?

The biggest piece of BS, though, is affirmative action. If you're white or asian, you're being cucked by admissions officers in favor of Tyrone or Pedro. They want to create these categories (on something as arbitrary as race, no less) that sacrifice the value of merit in favor of political correctness. pure fucking ideology :^(. I understand income-based categorizing, but race-based shit accomplishes nothing; not only does it draw in less-qualified students, but it also produces more mediocre graduates. Seriously, ridiculous stuff.

And one last thing: the whole push towards generalization cucks over more students then one might think. Say you're a complete Math autist: prodigy-tier, USAMO finalist, and incredibly passionate about the whole thing. Colleges will typically ignore you in favor of the more "well rounded" student, even if you would, in all likelyhood, make the superior graduate. I know a kid like this; he's matriculating to a state school because he got cucked by MIT and the ivies. Now, if you're undecided with respect to major, generalization should be fine, but it shouldn't be bad enough where it removes qualified, single-minded students from the admit pool.

so, to recap:
>essays are bull
>extracurriculars are favored arbitrarily
>generalization is (often) cancerous
>political correctness tarnishes the meritocracy

there you go. ask me anything.

no, yeah, people do have a weirdo complex about the place, which is based on a reputation which is becoming less and less true every year, but it's still a good school and i had a fantastic time there and miss it terribly

ah well what can you do

also, lol @ the dude who (rightly) used "people who still drink 4loko" as an insult, that was great
