can someone explain to me why Jest gets such high praise? Is it because of it's scope and relatability/empathetic quality?

Any other American publishing fiction or non-fiction between 1987 and 2008. You should read more of them if you think Wallace was the best of the lot.

It has its moments, and this is coming from someone who isn't a big fan of DFW. He has the ability to create unique and surreal situations in an interesting way, though I think he often fails to express sentiments to the extent he desires. When he does succeed, it's quite impressive (the vegetable's orgasm with the muscles of her mouth involuntarily forming a stupid smile, or when Hal's grandpa fucked his knees up at the exact moment he heard his father's condemnation.

The best American novel published in that time is definitely Mason & Dixon.

It got popular because of its quirky qualities
>It's so long!
>So many footnotes!
>An entire imaginary filmography!

I can't say the supposed empathetic and emotional insights had any impact on me.

>rips everything from DeLillo and Pynchon
>gets acclaimed forever by tryhard undergrads who have read fewer than 100 books

that being said a fair number of his essays are amazing.
