Why should one read DFW? From what I've understood he just writes about random nonsense like Quebec Independence or Burger King. Is there a message to his stories, or does he try to just name-drop as many social references as possible?

yeah, infinite jest is literally just sentence-long name-dropping of pop culture. sometimes he doesn't even include a verb
crazy right?

you fucking idiot

Well I just dove right into Gravity's Rainbow. From what I've seen of David Foster Wallace, I haven't been too terribly impressed (although I wouldn't be hasty to write someone off as shit), but Gravity's Rainbow is a seminal book of esoteric knowledge and artistic expression. What an endeavor to read though, it's a page flipper.

ij is dense and occasionally jargon-filled, but not difficult and quite rewarding
tcol49 isn't difficult either, a lot less of a commitment, also a great read

I've had Pale King on my shelf for almost a year now, having bought it right after Infinite Jest, but now I've no interest in reading it at all. Should I sell it to a Used store or is it really worth the read for a fan of IJ?

i've heard this, what about V, GR and IV?

>> No.6190528

>>6190520

V. is upper-mid tier difficulty. GR is top tier, IV is easy as pie

>> No.6190538

>>6190528
gonna go the corrections -> tcol49 -> IV -> GR then

>> No.6190545

>>6190520
IV is easy as fuck

GR is tough at times, but starts easy enough and has an easy to follow main thread running throughout

V never goes as crazy as GR, but I found it was harder to get into than GR, because with GR you have the context of WW2 to latch onto and a main character whose adventures are fairly straightforward, but V has one main character whose world is quite strange and another doesn't seem to do a whole lot at all in the beginning

I started Pynchon with Inherent Vice since I heard it was "Pynchon lite".

Even as a "lite" Pynchon novel it's still got lots of complexities, but it doesn't require you knowing those to make it enjoyable. It's easy to follow the whole way through.

nah you're just an idiot and there shouldn't be any ambiguity about it
