She loves the Game of Thrones books and has said that GRRM's writing style makes everything else seem lackluster/bad. What would you guys recommend?

"The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.”

I'd recommend a big-hearted Dickens book just because they always make me feel great and affirm life, and the style is also just a pleasure to read. I like Hard Times a lot, but pretty much all of them are good. Really not sure how helpful this is, though, hope she gets better.

She's probably better of dead. I'd rather be dead than an absolute pleb.

its a metaphor, i get what it is, he even says that's an "EASY WAY OUT", since getting burned and slow-roasted is way worse than just a split-second before you make a funny horror movie soundeffect on the pavement

he knows nothing about suicide other than the fact he committed it.

Are there any fantasy books that are better than GoT? I'm assuming there are; I forgot to mention that I'd like to get her something that isn't too heavy. The fantasy genre seems like the best choice.

Infinite Jest isn't terribly heavy OP... Don't count it out just because it is such a meme. It is really a good novel for somebody in her position and could even be a gateway for her into less pleb literature

Just get her to watch some SOL anime. Pretty heart warming and cute stuff.

It's probably one of the big contributors as to why so many /a/nons are still clinging on to life even though they know their misery. It's like a wonderful warm, mallow, fluffiness washes over you and you can just forget the real world.

DFW was such a fucking lowlife. Comparing people who are forced to leap to their death in order to escape immolation to people with depression who have a hundred different options other than suicide is fucking disgusting. I suppose that's how he justified taking his own life, the fucking pussy.

Give her No Longer Human or Jude the Obscure, both uplifting books.

Or maybe just not bother with books all together if she loves GRRM. Maybe get her some shit young adult stuff instead.

I'm sorry this happened to her OP. I ended up in a ward once and pretty much the only thing I read that summer was Orson Scott Card SF novels - it was all I could stomach. Anything less predictable or more complex was too hard for my weary, messed up brain. I could only listen to certain music too. Get her something random like poems or comedy writing.
