Now I know why /lit/ hates sci fi.

I'd like to hear some impressions of this book beyond your vague shitpost. It's gotten hype and it sounds legitimately entertaining, whether it's high lit or not.

This is almost literally the most pathetic thing.

>> No.6017448

it's a fun enough read, but yeah it's pretty shit. le quirky sarcastic astronaut man gets old real quick. especially when you consider that literally every character in the book makes exactly the same kind of sarcastic quips. people honestly think this stuff is characterization these days tho.

>shops it around publishers
>no one wants it

>publishers hounding him for physical publication rights
>eventually sells them for an undisclosed six figure sum
Admit it, /lit/... You're all just jealous.

The fan base lit presents for readers of the Greeks a deep literary works also makes it seem like something someone should avoid

And what science fiction fanbase exactly? The people dressing up as Klingons and computer game characters aren't reading science fiction novels

>> No.6018179

Good, I was going to make a thread about this but now I don't have to.

I have an issue with the "sci fi" label in how restrictive it is. I have just finished The 3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch (PKD) and have just started reading Brave New World (Huxley). PKD's work is constantly shoved into the sci fi section of book stores while works like Brave New World and 1984 aren't — why?

Though I have only read one of his works so far, PKD's philosophical and metaphysical themes should surely enable it to not be shoved in a corner, just because it includes space travel and technologically induced evolution in its world building.

Star Wars and Star Trek are sci fi in the way that they use futurism to tell a story. PKD uses futurism as a way of debating metaphysics.

Why acknowledge the difference with Brave New World but not PKD?

What is the problem with this book? Second time I see a thread about it where people claim it is shit and no one explains why.

Philip K. Dick's first published novel was "Man in the High Castle." they weren't sure where to put it. But it had multiple dimensions, so they put it with sci-fi instead of general novels. The rest of his books [even voices from the street] get classified as sci-fi, just to keep the author's books together.

Brave New World and 1984 are intensely political novels. Their authors had already been classified as political writers and not science fiction authors. Ideas of multiple dimensions and things have been around for so long that books like the mirage get classified as novels now, and not as fantasy.

>sandstorms

Why is this a mars meme? Has no one done any actual research? The sandstorms on mars would not be deadly because the atmosphere is so thin. You vision would be impaired severely but you would barely be moved by the wind, it would be equivalent to a regular windy day on earth, but probably less.

I groan every time the 'oh noes sandstorm' garbage appears when someone is on mars.

>allowing others to dictate the things you like
I would never play Dungeons and Dragons because the only people that game attracts is autistic fucks. I know that I won't like it because im not a neckbeard. Or just like I will never watch anime for the same reason

But what you describe is not
>allowing others to dictate the things you like
You're just using a set of observances to gauge whether you'll like a thing. Others are not dictating to you in this case at all.

The dialogue (mostly monologues actually) in this book is absolutely horrendous. I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something about the way that all the NASA personnel talk to each other that feels so forced and unrealistic.

Not at all surprising that this is the same guy that wrote that cringey 2deep4u "The Egg" story that gets copypasta'd around.
