No brag, just fact.
Time is limited. And I only read for pleasure these days. The history of the cold war, for example, is simply more interesting to me now.

The problem I have with steampunk, cyberpunk, or really any genre ending with "-punk", is that they all rely on gimmicks instead of actual original content.

Steampunk:

>let's write a Western/Victorian novel with the same exact plot as a hundred others
>but with DIRIGIBLES AND AND AN EXCESS OF POCKET WATCHES

Cyberpunk:

>I want to make a romance novel
>but with CYBORG WAIFUS AND LASER GUNS LOLOLOL

You'll find bad writing in any genre, cyberpunk and steampunk are no exception. Good cyberpunk, however, is an interesting exploration into a society more technologically developed than socially, what you've described is a story with a cyberpunk setting tacked on. Cyberpunk done right is more than a gimmick.

Steampunk has the same potential but it's a younger genre, at the moment it's primarily gimmick like you've described.

Also, even bad cyberpunk is fucking entertaining. How can you not enjoy cyborg waifus and laser guns?
