It's been a few months. I think it's time for a good old-fashioned Sam Harris thread!

I was extremely surprised to find someone as mainstream as him openly arguing that free will doesn't exist. Gives me hope.

The fuck?

Why do you people get so freaked out about him?

Nothing he says is particularly original, he doesn't do much to defend his metaphysical and ethical views against age-old objections. He just says things in contentious ways, none of his arguments are particularly groundbreaking. He just mashes a bunch of diffrent views on some issues into one big world view which many people happen to disagree with.

His objection isn't that Harris' claims are empirical. Actually the opposite. Harris' move it to say "well being of humans is moral", which isn't an empirical claim. As far as anyone can tell it's a dogmatic one, or an appeal to popularity. If you can find an empirical basis for morality philosophers would happily accept it, but saying "we all think human suffering is bad" doesn't pass muster because it's dependent on popular opinion.

His thought his hand-me-down neoliberal garbage disguised as a great revelation because "muh atheism." He also looks like Chunk from the Goonies. Note that that last part is not an argument against him, merely an observation meant as a childish ridicule.

I feel the same way. It becomes much easier to empathize with people once you realize the illusoriness of free will. It seems to me those who hate him haven't really read anything by him. Rather, they've seen a few quotes online taken out of context and/or are uncomfortable that he's denouncing religion so directly.

As >>4686820 said, he never really says anything original, but he is using his popularity to bring important ideas to the mainstream, and for that I respect him.

>> No.4687836

>>4687824
I dislike him because he's so revoltingly neoliberal, which, along with laissez-faire capitalism, is my least favorite intellectual allegiance.

If he's going to be an atheist, he could at least do me the favor of being a pacifist too.

>> No.4687856

I think Sam Harris is cool as an individual, but outside that this whole pop philosophy movement of 'New Atheism' is about as trivial as the side it opposes. Just sheep who'll listen to anything standing on a stage, talking vigorously about some foreign evil. 'War on Religion' is about as fucking indefinable and full of shit as 'War on Terror'.

But as I said he's cool for other stuff, as is Daniel Dennett. When they're not going on about something as fucking pointless as whether or not some insignificant human brain accepts the cognitive disposition of 'creator'.

It can't become easier for you if hard determinism is true, because it was already slated for you to be conditioned to feel that way since the beginning of fucking time. Fuckers.

It's just cognitive dissonance all the way down.

Not the guy but even though I think determinism is true I believe it doesn't matter, because if everybody was acting like it was true we would end up living like we do now. If I can't do anything about my own actions this would justify my actions and judgments against those who can't do anything about theirs, and vice versa. I'd say free will should be considered a work hypothesis.
