>one of the girls does English Literature at a uni that's known for being the best in the UK for it
>we all have to say a few facts about ourselves, including favourite book
>she says The Great Gatsby

lel, so was she hiding her power level or are /lit/ really a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals who claim that, just because they skimmed through a book in high school and their teacher told them the themes, a book is entry level high school tier?

>> No.4137615

>>4137601
So Oxbridge then? Anyway, yes, a lot of high school lit is taught because it's really good and not everyone feels the need to be a hipster with their personal favourites.

fucking read it and come to your own fucking conclusion, you fucking shithead, instead of asking us the most boring possible question about it that leads to the most worthless possible discussion that's all about attitude and authenticity and greatness instead of anything that's actually in the book. fuck. fucking shit. fucking SHIT

Great Gatsby isn't pseudo-intellectual enough for /lit/. As far as encapsulating a period of history along with its social malaise, Great Gatsby is a top tier book.

Thats what you get for listening to the same faggots who think Les Miserables is shit or Kafka boring. You want to stay away from the Catcher in the Rye / Game of Thrones / Hemingway threads.

The Great Gatsby is considered a classic for a reason. It makes for an excellent social commentary and Fitzgerald is a master proseman. It is, however - and this is probably where the conflict over it's supposed greatness arises - over rated.

/lit/ ain't /mu/, maaaan. We just like books is all.

Mind you, /mu/ has its benefits. It just pursues that pleb/patrician in-joke with a little too much dedication.

idk, I read half of it with my physical copy and half of it on my e-reader. I never really felt that flipping back and forth between the endnotes made it any more fun to read, so the hyperlinked notes were appreciated whenever I was using the e-reader.

>> No.4139031

Gatsby is a tremendous book and it's a shame that idiots think it's "high school lit." Honestly, high schoolers aren't really mature enough to understand everything going on in that book. If you read it in high school yourself, it's worth revisiting now that you are (presumably) an adult.

It's just fucking purple prose you ridiculous cunts. It's no different than what any high fantasy hack writes, but it's apparently acceptable to slobber all over it just because it's sold in the right section in B&N.

If you think prose only comes in 'purple' and 'Hemingway' varieties then you're really missing out. Fitzgerald's prose is rich with insight, keen perception and - above all else - beauty.

lmfao if you care at all about the 4chan "community" and think there's anything of value here aside from a few decent threads about latin american or postwar eastern european writers every now and then. for the record, I'm not from reddit either, and that's why I can tell that both sites are almost equally lame.

Sounds like a qt I'd be all over that.

Just read the Great Gatsby for the fourth time, haters will hate.

First time I ever read it I was sitting on a subway train, and I wound up riding the goddamned thing all around town from one end of the line to the other because I didn't want to get up and break the spell.

It's good in a way that more intellectually dense stuff like Ulysses and Infinite Jest are not. It's simple and elegant and just enjoyable, and has a level of social commentary as well but not one that intrudes on the narrative.
