The Great Gatsby is considered a classic for a reason. It makes for an excellent social commentary and Fitzgerald is a master proseman. It is, however - and this is probably where the conflict over it's supposed greatness arises - over rated.

idk, I read half of it with my physical copy and half of it on my e-reader. I never really felt that flipping back and forth between the endnotes made it any more fun to read, so the hyperlinked notes were appreciated whenever I was using the e-reader.

Just read the Great Gatsby for the fourth time, haters will hate.

First time I ever read it I was sitting on a subway train, and I wound up riding the goddamned thing all around town from one end of the line to the other because I didn't want to get up and break the spell.

It's good in a way that more intellectually dense stuff like Ulysses and Infinite Jest are not. It's simple and elegant and just enjoyable, and has a level of social commentary as well but not one that intrudes on the narrative.
