Hey /lit/! Where should I start up with reading Ludwig Wittgenstein? Also if you can give me a little bit of an insight into his philosophy it would be most welcome!

The best way you can sum up his philosophy is: Read everything or don't bother with a single line.

OP, this.

Although I'd probably read Monk first (I did, in fact) to get an overview of both Early and Late Wittgenstein before diving into either/or the Tractatus and the PI.

>> No.4097913

did he write any essays that were philosophical?

I don't consider any of his work on language, logic, semantics, to be philosophy or interesting at all. His tractatus is absolute garbage and I'm glad he completely distanced himself from it.

Did he write any philosophy at all? On wiki it just shows all his silly ideas about dick-ducks and semantics...utter nonsense.

Wittgenstein was a shitty, unclear writer. Read 2nd literature about him if you must.

This is a nice little infographic. As far as reading order is concerned, I recommend checking out the Brown Book while reading Philosophical Investigations, only because it was originally supposed to turn into PI. He abandoned it and started over. The Blue Book is also a good companion to PI.

On Certainty is crazy fun, but not heavily edited so it might be confusing to understand at points.

Tractatus is an amazing read, especially if you have an understanding of Frege and Russel (and other early analytics).

>> No.4099033

>>4098926
Thanks, but the infographic needs improving. When I made it I forgot you needed to have a vague understanding of Wittgenstein's 'simple objects' in order to grasp a mid sized chunk of the Investigations quite early, so I need to add to look them up on Wikipedia, for instance. This is one of the reasons I'm running the study group on IRC - to improve the guide image and pick up on things I missed.

I'll post instructions on how to join in with the study group later (we're up to section 40) - posting from my phone and just about to head into a conference.

I just got home twenty minutes ago from a great conference, yes. Here are the logs from the last couple of meetings:
Sections 7 - 23: http://pastebin.com/T6Cj0AG9
Sections 23 - 39: http://pastebin.com/xGJcVCu5

The next meeting is a bit different - a prelude to getting into the next set of sections in the Investigations on simple objects, and involves reading the wikipedia article on the Tractatus, and a little bit of independent research on Simple Objects for early Wittgenstein. The meeting is on Thursday 12th September, 8pm GMT (real GMT, not BST.)
It's very different from the other meetings (and will be shorter I suppose,) in part because I'm going on holiday on Friday, so can't manage any time this weekend. And in part, because I've realized that for a good chunk of the early Investigations (40-64ish,) you need to know a little bit about simple objects.

Thanks for all the comments about how silly it was for me to get banned, and apologies to all who have missed meetings due to my messups with timing. After this week's strange meeting, we'll be on the home and dry with everything - I've got the next few weeks readings lined up.

I read his work called on certainty and I have to say it opened my eyes. The book itself is quite short, but the ideas that are pondered there are quite fascinating and you really “think” for yourself. After reading him it changed the way I read other philosophers.
Good luck reading.

Hey, I've never really used IRC before so if you could help a brother out and tell me how exactly to join up to the server, that'd be great.

Also, if anyone has a link for PI with both the German and English that would be awesome. I can find the Anscombe translation PDF via the google machine, but I find the German to be a great (and important) aid with Wittgenstein. Unfortunately, I left my copy of the text back in the States when I moved :(

Yes, of course, all you need to do is:

Download an irc client (there are many available.)

Type "/server irc.rizon.net"
Type "/join #wittgenstein"
Type "/nick (whatever you want your name to be)"

That's all there is to it!
