In my experience, the stoners act as if they are greatly enlightened, and others cannot understand their great wisdom. I was once told that you can't claim to know anything about how the universe works unless you've tried LSD. Of course, this assertion was followed by rambling about how "everything fits together" and suchlike.

When I tried to discuss the problems I had with this "enlightenment", I was just told to go away until I'd experienced it for myself.

If everyone smoked weed everyone would be smart enough to be Athiests. That's why it'll never be legalized.

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved.

Contemporary musicians never spoke highly of the Beatles, and for a good reason. They could not figure out why the Beatles' songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that the Beatles were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Beatlemania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). THat phenomenon kept alive interest in their (mediocre) musical endeavours to this day. Nothing else grants the Beatles more attention than, say, the Kinks or the Rolling Stones. There was nothing intrinsically better in the Beatles' music. Ray Davies of the Kinks was certainly a far better songwriter than Lennon & McCartney. The Stones were certainly much more skilled musicians than the 'Fab Fours'. And Pete Townshend was a far more accomplished composer, capable of "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia". Not to mention later and far greater British musicians. Not to mention the American musicians who created what the Beatles later sold to the masses.

The Beatles sold a lot of records not because they were the greatest musicians but simply because their music was easy to sell to the masses: it had no difficult content, it had no technical innovations, it had no creative depth. They wrote a bunch of catchy 3-minute ditties and they were photogenic. If somebody had not invented "beatlemania" in 1963, you would not have wasted five minutes of your time to read a page about such a trivial band.

Do you have enough understanding for such statement?
Yes, they were extremely popular and best-selling and it often was because of catchy rhytm but they definitely deserved the fame, if not as much, still a lot of it.
The songs definitely have instrumental innovations and creative depth.
Many songs have extremely smart lyrics.
Though much of the contributions to their popularity were the times. Their music gave fuel for the counterculture, same as Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix and many more.
Rolling Stones were good too and they were popular as well. Less but still very popular.
Word ,,Beatles" today mean a standard to many. There are these kids who are always screaming "BEATLES BEATLES, SORRY FOR MY GENERATION, BEATLES BEATLES REAL MUSIC" and many of them have no idea what they're talking about and why they actually praise them. These are the traces of the band's prime.
But actually Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Peppers are one of the best LPs of all time in many aspects.

Listen to "Tomorrow Never Knows." They recorded a guitar solo, then re-recorded it played backwards. If that's not technically innovative, pray tell what is? Also the lyrics of Eleanor Rigby are amazing. Plus, rather than writing albums as collections of single songs, they wrote whole albums (i.e. Abbey Road and The White Album).

While you have a point about commercial success, I think you're overreacting to the Beatles.

Intelligent people that smoke weed don't consider themselves enlightened. I'm getting the impression that some people in this thread have never smoked, thus assuming its something that it isn't. Admittedly, you're going to have the mindless morons who, when they smoke, spew out nonsense about how the world works. I have never ever had a conversation like that amongst friends. We all recognize we are under the influence and don't try to make any intelligent claims.

That being said, I'm not defending weed. It's not great for your mental health. It isn't, however, something that immediately makes you understand the works or give you that impression.
