Hey /lit/, I've noticed a troubling number of people who like to hate on people who don't believe that there is intrinsic value in the universe. Why is that?

I have a theory, I think they are all afraid that they are pointless, useless, and small, and dont want to be pointless, useless, or small.

If there was an intrinsic value of the universe, surely it wouldn't exclude people to the extent that they couldn't see an intrinsic value in the universe. Surely it couldn't be that mean, especially to Anon.

Being pointless, useless and small isn't mutually exclusive with the universe having value. My valuation of the world is what makes me feel as such.
You might want to ask why people find human life intrinsically valuable but all the answers regarding that have been exhausted 100 years ago or so; the problem now is how to integrate this into a world where people act as though there is value.
Or something.
this thread hasn't been related to literature but you should look up speculative realism maybe

I think that you're the only person who has actually argued a real point with me on this topic.

I was under the impression that this board discussed philosophy, too. There are a lot of phil threads.

Also, I think that the pointlessness, uselessness, and smallness of the individual has everything to do with the universe/life/whatever having intrinsic value or not. Actually, scratch that, there is a lot about the universe that we have no way of proving either way, but I am under the firm impression that human beings try to project some sort of value upon everything in order to feel better about themselves.

Well, I think people like to think that recognizing beauty is a reflexive process, that the beauty of the world presents itself to us. "It isn't necessary that you leave home. Sit at your desk and listen. Don't even listen, just wait. Don't wait, be still and alone. The whole world will offer itself to you to be unmasked, it can do no other, it will writhe before you in ecstasy." But even when we strip ourselves of everything to view the world naked, we're the only ones who can writhe in ecstasy--or we writhe in ecstasy as the world, which you might see as projecting. It depends on how much you hold in the world or how much the world holds in you maybe. So obviously people with a lot more to hold have a lot more room for invective maybe.
