"For example" meaning that's not what you genuinely believe? I'm well aware there are dozens of non-English countries that do literature very well. I just wanted to know what you guys' list looks like.

If it is your list, which Czech authors do you like?

>> No.3319434

>>3319425

I find it hard to comprehend that people who read lots of books don't read translations. What about Old English, Old Greek et cetera? It's impressive if you read a non-translated version of The Republic, for example

>> No.3319441

>>3319432

Kafka, Heyduk and Lustig, just as examples. I have to admit that I have read a lot of great English literature, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's in the "top 10"

turns out /lit/ does pay attention. Yes, I've read translations and yes, the USA and UK are one of the best in the literature circle of elites.

>>3319441
Why do you keep giving "examples"? I'm confused as to if you're saying these are just some Czech authors, or if these are actually Czech authors you like. I'm very familiar with Czech lit, so I wasn't needing an example list of them or anything.

>> No.3319470

>>3319465

No, as in they are good Czech authors that I like AND they are respected

>> No.3319475

>>3319470
Okay. Any more than just those three? It seems like you'd have had to read a lot of Czechs to put it in your top 10 countries list. Unless Kafka is giving it a big boost for you.

>> No.3319488

>>3319475

You are right. That is not a specific top-10 list, it's more of an example of a list of countries which could potentially be "literary superior" to countries where English is the spoken language. There are a few more Czech authors who are really good (Hora, Bondy, Brod) that I have read, but I can't really say that Czech works are better than those from any other country. They could potentially be, however, which I guess kind of was my point.

The bingo states "thinks ANY English speaking country is one of the best 50 countries in terms of literature".

How can ANY English speaking country be one of the top 50?

Learn2 not generalise

If you want me to back up my stand: You can consider Singapore to be an English speaking country since ALL schools except for foreign international schools use ONLY English in their curriculum (obviously except for Mother Tongue lessons). Also, English is one of Singapore's 4 official languages. In MY opinion Singapore can't be one of the top 50. Our history's not deep enough to have Singaporean classics and modern authors aren't competent enough. Also, self-censorship among writers and the media isn't helping our literary advances.

>> No.3319529

>>3319518
I was meaning the post where you said "I have to admit that I have read a lot of great English literature, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's in the "top 10"". I'm not just understanding why no one is giving their actual list.

>> No.3319534

>>3319529

People should give their top 50 list, that would be more interesting. I just responded because you asked for a list of "10 countries that are better than English countries in terms of literature". I wouldn't NECESSARILY place an English country in the top 10 (even though I probably would).
