Quentin, you'll be exactly the same fuck you've been for the past 49 years.

I agree completely, OP.

Tarantino does not cut it for me and I don't see how he gets away with making such violent films that no one in the audience understands.

His entire fan base consists of adolescent males. The kind who don't understand irony and would make a fight club after watching the movie Fight Club.

His films encourage stupidity.

Check out this clip between Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvJKHCqPzrU

Anderson's remarks are so much more intelligent and I think it's PTA's way of addressing the problems with Tarantino's violence and his stupid audience.

Tarantino has always depended on the critics to extract meaning from his movies.
Paul never had that done for him; he worked his way into critical favor against the current because the simple truth is, critics like to be entertained and Tarantino is more entertaining. In the way a plane crash is more entertaining than a dream ballet. There is just enough substance in Tarantino films for critics to tell themselves they enjoyed it because it was particularly postmodern or about violence or tackling racism.

Quentin is really in the same boat as all the child stars. They both made it big when they were young and people paved the way. And they have the most arrogant way of thinking they have succeeded on their own. I remember an interview with Brad Pitt and QT where Brad was pointing out how Quentin made the shooting time shorter, and he was saying 'when people get in Tarantino's position, they don't make things harder for themselves, they make things easier.' BULL SHIT. He and Mr. Weinstein have been in unique positions their whole careers where they haven't had to face the harsh realities that every other film-maker does.

For me, Inglorious Basterds was an outright offensive film. I have no clue how he got away with that.

So, what, Jews become Nazis? I didn't see an ounce of intelligent commentary about the Holocaust and WWII.

Overrated? Probably. Worth watching? Why not.

I'm going to go out and say it, though: more often than not, a P.T. Anderson film in a theater at any given time strikes me as more interesting than the usual choices available.

Every one of his films after Pulp Fiction has also been a "pulp fiction". His movies were never meant to be realistic or whatever you were expecting them to be...they are supposed to be like a PULP FUCKING FICTION. In that regard, he has massively succeeded.

I think people here are giving him far too little credit. Aside from the childish fanbase he has, none of which are here, most people are fairly realistic about who and what he is. He's a fairly stylish director with a nice knowledge of cinematic history, at least in the particular genres he shoots. He isn't a director that really pushes boundaries or challenges himself even, but he puts out entertainingly stylish films. He has nice cinematography, soundtracks, and sometimes even some decent substance to his films (not too much obviously). He could really improve his movies if he wasn't so in love with hearing himself speak. I mean some of his dialogues are ridiculous and really kill the pace in movies. Resevoir Dogs was pushing it, but then you have the superman speech in Kill Bill Pt. 2, we get it Quentin, you have thoughts sometimes.

I didn't hallucinate it, I wrote it.
You seem to want to give him credit for making a film in the pulp style, which he did. That's hardly a tall order, or a good compliment.
Since you can't even string together a defense for a director you like, I see no point in discussing this with you any further.

>For me, Inglorious Basterds was an outright offensive film. I have no clue how he got away with that.

The whole point of Basterds was that the first three quarters of the movie were really no different than the German war propaganda film that is shown in the theater, and that the real life audience cheering for the death of Nazis was no different than the Nazis in the movie cheering about the death of Allied soldiers.

Obviously, this went over most people's heads. Inglorious Basterds is easily Tarantino's most intelligent flick though.

Okay, so you agree with me that his films are pulp fictions. Then why would you, knowing that, be disappointed by, criticize, or expect something much greater from his films than that of the a base pulp fiction? He has perfected the simplicity of the pulp fiction, just as the art of Piet Mondrian and other modernist artists were perfections of simplicities.

I'm not sure making exciting movies without much depth necessarily implies he's not "grown up." Does he wipe his own ass? Could he handle his own taxes at least fairly well if he had to? Making "mature films for mature viewers such as myself" is hardly the same thing as being an adult.
>What such event would make him grow up?

Again, I think you're just trying to come up with a criticism for something you don't personally enjoy.

I get that, but I really think like that's more of an excuse.

I think any intelligent director would be greatly bothered by the fact that no one is "getting" his films.

Tarantino just plays on this "lol im makin a film about how you like to get jerked off by cinematic violence and youre not going to understand the irony because i dont really care and thus you will prove exactly what my film is about whoa!"

If Django Unchained gets a terrible audience reception in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings, then I'll be glad. Tarantino is cinematic cancer.
