Jung took his own theory quite seriously. And so did many of the addors to it, the most important of which was Augusta, namely adding the intertypal theory.
Not many people seem to use the theory seriously, indeed. They mostly approach it ''for fun'' - as in, they do not think much about what to trust and what to discard, how to go about confidently understanding your own type and those of others, but are rather content with role-playing and the like.
After I observed that the types fit well with the people I know, and that the correspondence of those people with the theory of intertypes was too unlikely to be a coincidence, I began taking the talk of typologists on this more seriously. The pre-requisites for this was reading only the basic theory and to get advice from people who understood well how to use it. Without this, I'd probably never have seen its validity or gotten use from it.
I was recommended to read the book on Socionics (Jung types with intertypal theory, essentially) by Filatova.

Drat. I knew I should have limited my guess to "strong Ne" only. I got cocky and now I've been plucked. Yes, it is an acronym. The letters are a shorthand for a shorthand. I and E stand for Introverted or Extroverted. They denote whether your Dominant Cognitive Function (like a default mode of operation, more or less) is extroverted or introverted. N and S denote whether your preferential perceptive mode is Sensation or Intuition. F and T refer to the Judgement Axis of Thinking and Feeling, and the P or J tells you whether the first extroverted function a person has is a perceptive function or a judgement function. The entire system is dichotomized twice over, in so far as each of those eight functions is counter balanced against one another, but also counter balanced against it introverted or extroverted opposite; for example, Extroverted Feeling and Introverted Feeling; Extroverted Thinking and Introverted Thinking. There are a total of four basic categories which divide into eight total categories for a total of 16 personality combinations. Whichever function you prefer, automatically represses its opposite (and even further represses it's extreme opposites).

In the case of an INFP, your Function Stack would be:

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
Introverted Sensation (Si)
Extroverted Thinking (Te)

Those are the most basic parts of the mechanics. I won't go any further just now in case it's already too much.
