Does anyone else think the world just isnt novel worthy anymore? Theres no soil in which to write a novel anymore
Everything is too complex and too fake, people dont behave like people, the world is too connected but theres little any one person can do, just peasants living as as playthings of fate
Theres no values to get into conflict with one another, no traditional cultures to be depicted, no wild frontiers to be explored
What is left is autofiction, surrealism or dumb fantasyfication/sci fying
That is, either sollipsims or escapism
The face of the world became to ugly to be faced
The craft of using symbolism to get to higher meaning is lost
Its over

I seriously feel like the only novels that could be written would be something like Brett easton ellis or David Foster Wallace.
Which is why I think so many people are going into just scifi and fantasy among other reasons.

I am just a hobbyist who writes for himself but whenever I try for contemporary literary fiction I just feel like Im writing something I dont want to read. I dont feel like IM bringing anything good or noble into the world whatsoever.

>This progressive effacement of human relationships is not without certain problems for the novel. How, in point of fact, would one handle the narration of those unbridled passions, stretching over many years, and at times making their effect felt on several generations? We’re a long way from Wuthering Heights, to say the least. The novel form is not conceived for depicting indifference or nothingness; a flatter, more terse and dreary discourse would need to be invented.

I ask myself the same thing in regards to composition. How does one capture the spirit of the age while still creating beauty and building off of the achievements of the past?

That's strange, I have like 10+ books I've plotted out and 3 books written about modern life and the future. Maybe you just aren't a deep thinker?

Houellebecq is the example to follow here.

Literature is irrelevant because for the past 100 years it's refused to be relevant or help us understand our lives. It staged an orderly retreat from world affairs, following the world wars, and now dips its toes into aesthetic experiments or language gags like Oulipo at best. Now and then a DFW comes along, makes a timid attempt at saying anything, and then a frog jumps in his throat and he's mute. No one is talking, so no one is listening. Just say something, anything. That's what prose is for.

>Literature is irrelevant
This is why it is cool. Things that most people don't acknowledge or like, are cool for the reason it is exclusive. It's easy to be a "Swiftie" or to suck up to some rapper, but it is much more difficult to blaze your own trail and be confident in your individuality. Writing and speaking your mind despite the consequences makes someone cool. The "celebrities" that get lauded by the media and worshiped by fans, they suffer imposter syndrome because THEY KNOW they are imposters.
