The last thing I'll say on this (because this is a books board not a political one) is that you have to consider your held belief and ask yourself what is one piece of information, that, if you found out to be true, would change your mind about said belief. I think most people are only familiar with caricatures of "the other sides'" beliefs. This shows in discourse in person, online, and in politics. They look to the most radical voices on the other side and then use this as a real life strawman to confirm their starting positions.

More over, the post-modern condition, particularly moral relativism and the idea that truth is socially constructed, has deeply sunk into both the modern right and the left. But such post-modern arguments aren't actually new. Much of their main substance exists as far back as the pre-Socratics and Plato deals with them directly in the Protagoras and Gorgias and Aristotle and Saint Augustine take them on too.

I would contend that my experience strongly suggests that people have at best a very scant conception of the Aristotlean, Platonist, and Thomistic traditions that grounded ethics in the West pretty much into our modern era, just slowly decaying over time. Nor do they have a good frame for evaluating these traditions due to their hyper individualism, which is ubiquitous.

This, both sides slip in to emotivism and contradicting truth claims that cannot be resolved because they deny any mechanism for determining truth that lays outside the very power struggles they are engaged in. Politics becomes a substitute for identity, making people more dogmatic, whilst the absence of a universal paradigm for truth results in identity becoming the pillar of authority.

Virtue ethics, and more importantly, virtue epistemology, is lost in favor of utilitarianism or rules based thinking that must apply "for all individuals," across contexts. Thus, what it means to "be a good person," and "live a good life," become intractable questions that people now assume can only be answered by the individual, or often, that any answers must be created by the individual.

So, I don't think people actually are familiar with either good theory or opposing theories. They are familiar with hot takes and sound bites. A leftist is unlikely to read Rawls, and those on the right even less so. But their both even less likely to seriously consider the tradition that grounded ethics for most of Western history.

There's literally a section of the book going into apologetics over how affirmative action fails but we should nonetheless fight tooth and nail to maintain it. West doesn't tie this into any practical considerations or address the idea that a failed (and arguably unjust in and of itself) programme can become toxic to a just cause. His answer is only "it's a symbolic victory in that it addresses racism and losing a symbolic victory means retreat."

Seriously, the main takeaway from the book is that these people have no actual plan to build anything positive and want to drive change based on a racialized politics of resentment.
