I gave it a real chance. After 500 pages I didn't have any energy left. It is one of the most unique books I've read and it definitely has its crowd. But for me? The physical layout is fucked up and bothersome. The focus on characters shift all the time which makes me not care at all for anyone. Too little focus on the magical house aspect, too much focus on the boring characters. Overall I have nothing positive to say about it, just boring and tough to read with no real draw to it, the house isn't enough of a factor and there isn't any interesting philosophical message.

Worth a read. I think it leans too hard on le reddit "this book drove me insane" bullshit though

Good storytellers don't need gimmicks.

I think it's worth reading just for the Navidson stuff. And the Navidson stuff does need some form of frame story around it. I just didn't particularly like the 11 different frames within frames that Danielewski uses. If you want something with a similar vibe, but a totally different book, I would recommend Night Film by Marisa Pessl. It's a very different book and doesn't have any of the typographical shit. It's more straightforward, but somehow it has a similar vibe in a way that I'm to lazy to try to explain.

Not that it pertains to this book, but a good storyteller can *get away with* gimmicks

I read about 140-200 pages and I think this assessment is about right
