Highly anticipated by long time fans of the author but people outside the target audience jumping on board of the hype train to fit in with many of them being filtered once it finally came out?
Actually nevermind, I agree. It does take the comfy adventure that was the Hobbit and drags it out way too long.

I just finished the hobbit and I really enjoyed it. When it comes to the movie adaptations, I have either never seen them or its been so long that I don't remember anything. I've heard that the Lotr movies are very good, so I'm wondering if I should even bother reading the books?

I read the Lotr books and loved them
Then same time he movies and hated it them. There isn't a single thing I like about the movies. Hated every thing about them.

Watch the animated Hobbit, it's very wholesome. The Rings books are very worth it and you should totally bother with them. The movies are a different beast, they superficially captured the atmosphere and maybe a part of the aesthetics but they're very dumbed down and at points contradict the books in message etc.

the lotr movies have breathtaking production values, amazing music, and mostly great casting/acting. but they dumb down the plot by a lot.
in particular i found it fun to track where the characters are on the map, although its hard at times due to things having multiple names.

I hated all of them, all of them were a massive fail compared to how I imagined them in the book. Especially the humans and the elves. And I say that as someone who thinks young Liv Tyler was one of the best looking women out there. Even with her, she was a massive fail compared to how I imagined Arwen, who was introduced like this in the book:

In the middle of the table, there sat a lady fair to look upon. The light of stars was in her bright eyes, yet queenly she looked, and thought and knowledge were in her glance, as of one who has known many things that the years bring. Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white

So it was that Frodo saw her whom few mortals had yet seen; Arwen, daughter of Elrond [King of Rivendell], in whom it was said that the likeness of Lúthien [Elven princess who was most beautiful of all the Children of Ilúvatar (God) to ever live] had come on earth again; and she was called Undómiel, for she was the Evenstar of her people.

Such loveliness in living thing Frodo had never seen before nor imagined in his mind; and he was both surprised and abashed to find that he had a seat at Elrond's table among all these folk so high and fair.

I thought Gandalf's boots were too clean. Totally ruined it for me.

I'm being honest. They seem to have relied too much on special affects which were good for the most part but even a tiny detail such as Gandalf wearing weather worn boots was neglected which I think is a disservice to Tolkien. I do think the films were good but they were very much over rated.
