A HISTORY OF /lit/

Various /lit/ publications have come and gone: The Lit Quarterly, Pinecone, The April Reader, and Ideology, to name a few. There have been collaborative works, like Coronameron, The /lit/ Annotated Moby Dick, Legacy of Totalitarianism in a Tundra, and The Complete Works of God II. Some of these projects were one-offs, some were serialized. Some /lit/ projects, like Unreal Press, are still hanging on but are plagued by drama, and some, like &amp, seem to be rapidly in decline.

Also related are the solo writers of /lit/, composed of various namefags and shills who frequent the board: MNM-DR, John David Card, Zulu Alitspa, Frater Asemlen, Horia Belcea, Ogden Nesmer, Lewis Woolston. There are also those who did not come from /lit/ but are /lit/-adjacent simply because they are discussed here so frequently: Mike Ma, R. C. Waldun, Bronze Age Pervert.

This thread is for the discussion of the history of /lit/ writing and the future of /lit/. Why have so many /lit/ projects failed and fallen apart, and what do you think is next for the scene? Does anonymity vs pseudonymity vs. the use of real names make a difference in the success or failure of these projects, and the way in which these projects are perceived? Of the works that /lit/ has produced, are there common characteristics and themes shared between them? Is there a definitively /lit/ style of writing? Has /lit/ produced anything truly great, and if not, do you believe that it will in the future?

If you wanna see our successes look at someone like FourtySixtyFour, a RR writer who was professionally published this year and doubled his patreon income from $3k per month to almost $6k.
Akaso, author of Retribution Engine and now Cherno Caster, also found a real publisher.
No one likes to aknowledge them because they're "just Royal Road writers" and they're not toughing it out in the discord trenches like some people, but those are the real winners, people who actually write and try please an audience.

There's no longing for recognition, just a hunger for attention.
&amp and Unreal have done nothing but rot for an entire year now while others that actually took the craft seriously have flourished. Obviously this was no guarantee of success as can be seen with someone like Krake or Wing who did an outstanding job in their professionality and work ethic, yet are still floundering financially but it was something that you could set a plan, dedicate yourself to and have a non-zero chance at living your dream on. The discord crew chose instead not to compete, pacify themselves on the quick dopamine that comes with a clique based drama war and just pretend to be above the rat race.
I wanted to believe in them but the Ari stuff around May of last year was a downfall that they never recovered from.

I posted last month that there had been 50 ordered. Since I agreed to half of the royalties with Ryan I'm only really owed $150 or so. He bought Amazon ads and 4chan ads and sent out advanced review copies and sent out copies for my family and friends. Have you checked this anon's math >>22961435? At your book's specs, a paperback would be making $3.39 on each copy sold, which is $169.50 in total, meaning your share would be $84.75. Hardcovers do a little better, at $4.37 per copy, but that's still only $218.50 total, so even if you sold 50 hardcover copies you're only owed $109.25. Maybe these numbers are old (you say "last month"), but the $300 (total) figure seems contemporary to that.

This is the K2 of art, persevering against impossible odds for a prize that few will even understand. But the few that DO understand the triumph of taking signals from the ether and your dreams and visions you get in your mind, decode it into some overall arching story, and then putting it on paper for other people to understand the tale the universe wants you to tell, that is a reward of its own. that perfect crunch, a sound, a sensation,

a reminder that not all is lost in this dreary existence.
Walking back, I'd hold my breath past the trucks,

"There's none left," they tell me.
No chicken. No crunch. No spice to save me from despair.
There's no chicken in the goddamn world,

I keep a notepad with the last section of the story I was working on, I have basically the last sentence written out, or the scene I need to finish, then I leave that notepad in the open so that it is always occupying space in my life. This works great because sometimes I can be preoccupied with something, or come home after a gig job, or whatever, and then there's this fucking notepad and I see it, and often immediately an idea will pop into my head, if not, it reminds me what is going on in my /lit/ world and plants that seed deeper in my mind, so I subconsciously focus on it. I've written like 50k words in the last month with this technique and like a dozen decent poems.

Keep in mind I don't even have a phone, so all of my distractions are on my PC. I write on my PC as well, so I tend to have 0 games installed as well. I'll re-download Mordhau and play for a night and then delete it, re-install it after a week of work, both manual labour type shit to pay the bills, and working on my writing.

The key to the notepad is to always remind you that you ARE a writer and you have shit to do. I also have my 2 books on a coffee table nearby. So much of modern life is about fighting off the apathy as it is so easy to just get in a routine at a 9-5 job and a routine in your off-time of just consooming goyslop media, goyslop foods, and falling asleep at 10 PM while saying "tomorrow I'll write..." and then repeating your same day after work the next day. Then when the weekend comes, you're too tired to write, or you have plans with family, or whatever, and you never write.

I have...I'm reading through Justin's books right now. I've completed "The Pink". There was nothing wrong with it that an editor couldn't have fixed...such is the way with self-published titles, so I don't hold it against him. It was actually a great story with a lot of spell-binding parts. If you make it out of chapter 3 without being enthralled, I wonder if you're even alive. (Chapter 3 makes "Eyes Wide Shut" look like "Romper Room".) Although it would be rated NC-17, I think this would make a great movie...or, given the amount of content, a multi-episode miniseries, like the type Netflix makes all the time. It just goes to show you...there are a lot of great writers out there that only lack for publicity, which is distributed arbitrarily and without merit. In all of my life, I am trying to think of one humanitarian that I can identify. In my own personal circle, I know of a few acts of absolute humanity among my friend groups. An old friend of mine sheltered a firefighter for several years to get him into a situation of regular employment, and he also put his bitch through school. Myself, personally, provided shelter of 6 months to 3 different people, giving them no rent, to explore and have a place to live and have fun. Once you reach a place in life where you don't have to worry about money, where you can self-indulge, do you honestly believe the nerds that would write an article about narcissism have truly experienced it in a human sense? Go fuck yourself! I'm sure you have a high position in the hebrew dystopia. I am low-balling but I have my luxuries and my space to write. Not having to ever see crackheads is a luxury beyond measure, that is the #1 thing small towns have over the big city. Okanagan vistas and suffering-free streets.

The "natural growth" you're talking about is like the way an invasive species dominates a new ecosystem. It's not that the people who were already browsing 4chan necessarily grew in that direction, but that external forces pushed a new crowd of people here, in which they could proliferate and destroy the original environment because the conditions weren't sufficiently hostile to them.

If you zoom out enough, then you can call any occurrence "natural", but if you're willing to define certain systems as distinct, then you can call things unnatural or alien to them. And as an extension of that, if you go on long enough then the disrupted version of the original system may reach its own equilibrium and become something self-propagating, but that necessarily requires a destruction of the original form; another option is collapse, where no equilibrium is reached.

Now maybe you want to say that these elements were already here in the first place, and are thus natural. But an overabundance due to external factors can be unnatural. Wolves eat deer eat plants. If you have too many wolves, the deer are all eaten and the wolves all die too. If you have too many deer the plants are all eaten so the deer all starve (and then so do the wolves). If you disrupt the system by killing too many wolves, or by adding too many deer, or etc., the equilibrium is broken and the system collapses.
