It's not woke. Everyone (aside from one person) basically sees this crossdressing (for lack of a better, quick use term) US operative in terms of "you will never be a woman". And Steeply's many manly traits are mentioned. I would say it's particularly unfriendlyv verbiage conceptually to the sort of brand of transexual that would be considered like objectively sensitive.

I have never seen anyone put Steeply in the wynbaw context, book is very clear that he is doing it for the job and not personal reasons. Before he was a woman he was a Haitian and before that a monk of some cultish sort and he shaved his head and had his teeth pulled.
