I want to make a didecaphonic tone poem and I need a text with as many moods as possible (because the point is to show dodecaphony can express everything).

I was thinking of maybe rereading The Idiot. Would that be good?

Answer me, you bloody basterds sars!

So what is a dodecaphonic poem? Google is not really answering the question and just brings up results for serial/atonal music composition. My guess is that it is applying various 12 tone techniques to poetry, perhaps assigning a word to each note of a matrix and then navigating that matrix as you would in the composition (music) technique?

>> No.22804666

>>22804626
No, a tone poem is essentially where you take a story and make music for it (see Liszt's Faust Symphony). I want to do this while also employing 12 tone technique but I want as many different dispositions as possible, from joyous to placid to heroic to angry to morose. Even better if there are different settings culturally as well.

Make a musical version of it rather*

No, as a matter of fact, I would really rather adapt a novel instead of an epic poem.

Queneau's Exercises in Style would be fun, not really a novel but we can analyze it as a novel which doing so also has the pleasant side affect of making it more interesting for your needs from a structural standpoint.

Oh you just gave me an idea! I can use If on a Winter's Night by Calvino!

>> No.22804787

>>22804774
I think that requires over simplification and it does not really have the wide range of emotion you are looking for and much of the emotion is stated, not felt. Structurally it is quite interesting for music.

>> No.22804812

>>22804787
What do you mean? I seem to recall there even being a chase sequence.

>> No.22804879

>>22804812
Sure it has a decent range but Calvino never rips out the readers heart and stomps on it, the emotion is all colored by his analysis of the emotions and those emotions tend towards one end of the spectrum. Personally I find it a no go because I can not see how you can effectively do this without ripping out its metaficional heart and stomping on it, the over simplification I referred too. Can you call it a tone poem of If On A Winter's Night without the metafiction it is built on and even much of the emotional content depends on?

>> No.22805041

>>22804879
Well I imagine there are ways to "encode" metafiction into music but in general, music based on a text is going to require some familiarity with the text and must needs be significantly more abstract compared to the text it's based on.
