Why didn't he get rid of him in any of the countless much simpler ways? There are several points through their trek wher Severian asks the boy to wait while he checks out something potentially dangerous. He always could just tell him "wait for me here" and go away never to pick him up. Why did he tell the wizards that Little Severian is his son? He couod just tell them that he does not know the boy and they would take him.

They are different, long sun feels more like a traditional scifi/fantasy in the way it is written but is just as deep in terms of mysteries. But Silk might be one of my favourite characters ever put to the page.
Short sun is pure kino and will have the same "trip" feeling but long sun is necessary reading before you start that.

Long Sun is something completely new, like a historical novel (inside Solar Cycle universe) written in 3rd person. Short Sun continues the story of Long Sun and it's written in 1st person by the story's protagonist and some side characters. You know how Severian writes at the end of his adventures? Well, this guy begins writing near the end of his adventures, so there are things that happened about a year ago and things that are happening as he writes. Imagine if Severian started writing BotNS while he was returning home to Nessus instead of writing down his memoirs 10 years later. That's what it's like.

Don't think so. There have been multiple iterations of Severian because the world works as cycles. And there are various times when he is resurrected (by at least two different means). I think Wolfe said that the greater powers of the world are responding to previous cycles to get their desired outcome. But the books are written by the same Severian- same anima- in the same universe cycle.

What contradictions did you have in mind? The book is intended as one book in-universe. From what I've heard from others, it was Wolfe's publishers who wanted it split up into multiple volumes. It is also important to keep in mind that if there are contradictions they can arise for multiple reasons such as Severian withholding details, the fact he becomes confused at times and blends memories from Thecla and maybe even the other autarchs, and he may even lie. Sev's kinda goofy in the head at times.

>because the plot feels like it goes nowhere and is confusing
That never changes. And while there's an overarching plot about the new sun, Severian's adventures aren't all that connected to it. Severian is an extremely important person in the world of these books (which isn't a spoiler, since the reader knows he eventually becomes the autarch), but only a small fraction of the things that happen have any real importance. In a way, these books are written in a way akin to those spin offs titled in the vein of "The Adventure of Young Hercules", that take place before the main story and are rather inconsequential. Urth Of The New Sun is where most of the important things actually happen (and still only to a degree), which is funny because it only got written because the publishers forced Wolfe to do so, as they felt the story felt unfinished.

>> No.22813055

>>22812090
Had a bit of the opposite, Severian’s story felt complete and neat. Silk has to be rescued b y Horn .
Wolfe does the 'christic' heros journey with each of his characters.
Severian starts as the honest barbarian hero Conan / Hercules type who ends up a Buddha.
Silk is a perfect Parsifal / innocent idiot except except he doesn't save Hyacinth / Kundry / Magdalene, gets cucked instead and ultimately fails / falls but at the same time is transformed into the fallen godhead.
Horn is a bit of a Odysseus and some other archetypes I cannot quite place, rescues his fallen father (who art in heaven) but skips the whole Kundry / fallen women part.
The Silk/Horn journey was a bit much. Severian is neat and felt more profound at the same time.

>> No.22813075

>>22807060

I had the same impression. Severian is a straight shooter. Wasn't till seeing Wolfe threads on /lit/ did unreliable narration ever came up.

I inferred from here that people thought Severian was dishonest because of a rape subtext with Jolenta. Severian is uncivilised, Jolenta is an easy women, Sevrian sees a fruits, picks it, eats his fill, then discards it.
I think when he is godhead he briefly reflects on it with regret but that is hardly dishonest.

Horn (in life) was a failed hero of a different sort, him and Silk were yin and yang. Horn is jaded, seems to hate his family and himself, but has an intense zeal for life. Silk is Christlike but suicidal and despairing.
Horn's an interesting take on the Christian sacrifice, since he doesn't voluntarily choose to give life back to Silk, but still ultimately serves as the catalyst for Silk rebirthing himself at the end by accepting who he is.
